  • Big bats lift Mantachie to win at East Union

    East Union works hard at not allowing their opponents the big inning, but in their division opener Thursday night, they gave up three, falling to Mantachie, 16-3, at home.

    The Lady Urchins took an early 1-0 advantage with Rachel Elder plating Heather Dillard with her triple, and between the pitching of Alie Haynie and their defense, East Union held the Lady Mustangs hitless until the fourth inning. That is when things fell apart defensively for Andy Kirk’s squad.

  • UCT softball tournament: Day One

    West Union is halfway to repeating as the fast pitch champions in Union County, opening the tournament with two Friday night wins.

     

    Bailey Bogue went 3-for-4 on the day with a double, triple and home run, leading the Lady Eagles to a 4-2 win over Myrtle and 2-0 win over East Union.

    Against the Lady Hawks, Bogue’s triple came with two outs and no runners on base. A Myrtle error scored Bogue, but the Lady Hawks quickly rebounded, scoring two runs off a hit by Jenna Jordan and a West Union error.

    Ingomar snapped a five-game losing streak Tuesday night behind the bat of a senior that is making his way back to his full potential after shoulder surgery.

     

  • County basketball players honored in Division 2-1A

    Union County named 15 athletes, including the boys’ and girls’ Players of the Year, to the Region 2-1A All-Division list for basketball, announced by the coaches on Tuesday.
    Ingomar senior Wesley Jumper and Myrtle junior Aspriona Gilbert were honored as the Players of the Year for the region, as each led their respective teams in scoring.

  • Former Urchin signs professional deal

    During his only season with the Tigers, former Northeast Mississippi Community College pitcher/designated hitter Chase Porch made an impact on the Tiger record book.
     
    Now, Porch of East Union is carrying on that success after signing with the Amarillo (Texas) Sox of theAmerican Association.
     
    Amarillo opens its 2011 season against the Wichita Wingnuts on May 12-15 at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium in Amarillo, Texas.
     

  • Hawks win second straight UCT baseball title

    It’s still an early season for Myrtle, but despite needed game experience, the Hawks wrapped up their second straight Union County Tournament Championship on Friday, defeating East Union, 2-0.

     

    The Hawks used a four-run first inning to score their lone runs of the game and had several opportunities to add to that, loading the bases in each of the last three innings.

  • Union County Baseball Tournament- Day 1

    Myrtle 6 New Albany 5

    The Union County Tournament opened with the Hawks coming from behind to top New Albany by one run, 6-5.

     

    Down 5-3 in the fourth, Myrtle posted three runs off four hits, highlighted with a triple by Justin Pickens that scored the tying and winning runs.

    Myrtle held an early 1-0 lead in the first with a run scoring of a sacrifice play by Austin Floyd. New Albany responded with three runs in the bottom half off three straight hits.

  • Northeast softball schedules annual college exposure tournament

    Booneville City Park has been a hotbed of junior college softball action over the last couple ofweeks as Northeast Mississippi Community College starts to heat up the basepaths during its 2011 season.
     
    However, on Saturday, March 19, Booneville City Park reverts to the hotbed of high school softball as Northeast and Booneville High School team up to host their annual College Exposure Tournament.
     

  • Urchins fall in Booneville Tournament

    East Union had a fast start in their Tuesday game against Alcorn Central, but could not hold on, falling in extra innings, 11-10.

  • East Union runners sign with Blue Mountain College

    Jose Valle and Drew Bruce, who helped lead East Union to second place in the Mississippi 2A Cross Country Championship, signed grants-in-aid with Blue Mountain College on Friday.
