  • Blue Mountain baseball adds West Union standout

    Will Basil has been a force on the mound for West Union over the last three seasons, and will now take his game to the young and growing Blue Mountain College program.

  • Gilbert, Hand win individual titles at state track meet

    New Albany’s Zach Hand and Myrtle’s Aspriona Gilbert each earned individual state titles in the shot put during last weekend’s State Track Championships in Pearl.
    Gilbert, a junior at Myrtle, posted a mark of 35-11.00 in the 1A event, earning first over Chelsea Moore of Noxapater.
    The duo would also place in top two in the discus, with Moore winning and Gilbert finishing second. The Lady Hawks finished fourth as a team, while the Hawks earned an eighth place finish last Friday.

  • UCSD votes to keep co-op football program

    The Union County School District will give it a go at one more year of keeping its football program county-wide, as decided by a split vote by its Board of Trustees Monday night.
    The board voted 3-2 in favor of remaining a county-wide program in order to give a final push at recruitment from three of the four county schools.
    Board President Terry Cook, who cast the deciding vote, said he would go along with keeping the co-op program for at least one more year because of alleged renewed interest from students at Ingomar.

    Experience is not on the side of West Union this year, but despite the youth and the loss of seven players from the 2010 North Half runner-up squad, the Lady Eagles battled for two Saturday wins, advancing to next weekend’s 1A State Championship.

     

  • West Union drops game one of North Half Championship

    An uncharacteristic performance haunted the Lady Eagles in their first game of the 1A North Half Championship. A team that entered their Thursday night contest with a .912 fielding average committed six errors en route to an 11-4 loss at Wheeler.

     

  • Region 2-2A softball team announced

    East Union standout Heather Dillard was named the Co-Player of the Year for Region 2-2A in softball, an honor that accompanies three All-Division selections for the Lady Urchins.
    Dillard shares the honor with former Ingomar standout and current Mantachie Lady Mustang Allisa Patterson, who placed four others on the All-Division list.
    Catcher Rachel Elder, pitcher Alie Haynie and center fielder Chelsea Kuhn were also selected for East Union, who finished their season in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, falling to Baldwyn in three games.

  • Ingomar, West Union compete in 1A golf championships

    West Union and Ingomar wrapped up their 2011 golf campaigns, competing in the 1A state championships at Beau Pre Country Club in Natchez this week.
    The Falcons finished with an overall score of 758, which was good for third place in the five-team event.
    Austin Bynum of West Union led his team, shooting a 158 over two days, which was good for a fourth place finish as an individual, but the Eagles would finish as a team with a score of 874. Bynum was the 1A medalist in the 2010 State Championships.

  • Area girls team compete for state prep golf titles

    West Union and New Albany competed as teams in the 2011 Class I and Class II State Champions last week at the Whisper Lake Golf Club in Madison.
    The Lady Eagles finished with a team score of 403 with Allie Newby shooting a team-best 193 (100 on day one and 93 on day two). Mallory Newby shot a 100 and 109 over the two days, while Bailey Bates finished with a 217 (114 and 103, respectively).
    West Union finished fifth as a team, 75 strokes behind state champion, St. Andrews.

  • Lady Eagles sweep Smithville, advance to North Half

    It has been a daunting task for the Lady Eagles, looking for a way to get over the hump and surpass Smithville in the playoffs. Facing the Lady Seminoles in the postseason for a third year in a row, West Union swept their nemesis, capped by a 5-1 win on the road in Amory on Saturday.

  • Irish rally for 4-3 win at West Union

    One inning came back to haunt the Eagles in their game two match-up against Greenville St. Joe on Saturday. Leading 3-0 thanks to back-to-back home runs from Hunter McQuary and Taylor English in the fourth inning, West Union allowed four runs off four hits in the fifth, falling 4-3 to even the series.
