  • Lady Eagles fall in state championship

Two seniors reflected on their high school careers, different paths that led them to West Union and the school’s first ever state championship appearance in fast pitch softball.

For Danielle Taylor, she has grown up a part of the community, and for Leah Paige Goolsby, she joined three years ago, transferring from Hickory Flat. The two helped lead the Lady Eagles to the championship series in Ridgeland, but fell short in their ultimate goal of winning state.

  • Bogue Chitto takes game one of 1A championship

Championships are defined by big plays, but one on Friday hurt the Lady Eagles, as they dropped game one of the 1A state title series, 8-5, to Bogue Chitto.

Tied at five with bases loaded and two outs for the Lady Cats in the fifth, Rheagan Welch hit what was ruled a triple, despite a questionable play where Alexis Givens ran into West Union short stop Brittany Taylor in between second and third, a move that head coach Lisa Bogue argued was interference. The play, overlooked, scored three runs for Bogue Chitto, the difference in the ball game.

  • Blue Mountain baseball adds West Union standout

Will Basil has been a force on the mound for West Union over the last three seasons, and will now take his game to the young and growing Blue Mountain College program.

  • Gilbert, Hand win individual titles at state track meet

New Albany’s Zach Hand and Myrtle’s Aspriona Gilbert each earned individual state titles in the shot put during last weekend’s State Track Championships in Pearl.
Gilbert, a junior at Myrtle, posted a mark of 35-11.00 in the 1A event, earning first over Chelsea Moore of Noxapater.
The duo would also place in top two in the discus, with Moore winning and Gilbert finishing second. The Lady Hawks finished fourth as a team, while the Hawks earned an eighth place finish last Friday.

  • UCSD votes to keep co-op football program

The Union County School District will give it a go at one more year of keeping its football program county-wide, as decided by a split vote by its Board of Trustees Monday night.
The board voted 3-2 in favor of remaining a county-wide program in order to give a final push at recruitment from three of the four county schools.
Board President Terry Cook, who cast the deciding vote, said he would go along with keeping the co-op program for at least one more year because of alleged renewed interest from students at Ingomar.

  • Next stop: Jackson

Experience is not on the side of West Union this year, but despite the youth and the loss of seven players from the 2010 North Half runner-up squad, the Lady Eagles battled for two Saturday wins, advancing to next weekend’s 1A State Championship.

  • West Union drops game one of North Half Championship

An uncharacteristic performance haunted the Lady Eagles in their first game of the 1A North Half Championship. A team that entered their Thursday night contest with a .912 fielding average committed six errors en route to an 11-4 loss at Wheeler.

  • Region 2-2A softball team announced

East Union standout Heather Dillard was named the Co-Player of the Year for Region 2-2A in softball, an honor that accompanies three All-Division selections for the Lady Urchins.
Dillard shares the honor with former Ingomar standout and current Mantachie Lady Mustang Allisa Patterson, who placed four others on the All-Division list.
Catcher Rachel Elder, pitcher Alie Haynie and center fielder Chelsea Kuhn were also selected for East Union, who finished their season in the first round of the 2A state playoffs, falling to Baldwyn in three games.

  • Ingomar, West Union compete in 1A golf championships

West Union and Ingomar wrapped up their 2011 golf campaigns, competing in the 1A state championships at Beau Pre Country Club in Natchez this week.
The Falcons finished with an overall score of 758, which was good for third place in the five-team event.
Austin Bynum of West Union led his team, shooting a 158 over two days, which was good for a fourth place finish as an individual, but the Eagles would finish as a team with a score of 874. Bynum was the 1A medalist in the 2010 State Championships.
