When Shaquille Garner started playing football as a high school junior, he did not expect much playing time or even know if he would last. On Friday, his efforts will pay off, as Garner will join four others as the first senior class recognized by the Union County program.
Myrtle’s Monday night win may have seemed unimportant considering the Lady Hawks have already clinched the division championship, but in preparation for the playoffs, head coach Robert Gordon saw his team come through with a big inning, leading to Myrtle’s 12-3 win at Ingomar.
Union County saw improvements in their offense, opening up the passing game in their 41-20 setback at Strayhorn Friday night.
UC found themselves down early, 14-8, after two turnovers resulted in touchdowns for Strayhorn. UC responded to the Mustangs first score with a 70-yard Broderick Montgomery touchdown, and Vadale Rucker added two late touchdowns on throws from D.J. Armstrong in the fourth quarter.

Ashley Leach has come up with big hits for the Lady Urchins throughout the season, and added a three hit performance on Tuesday, helping East Union defeat Hickory Flat in five innings, 11-1.
The young Union County team was once again tested on the road and faced their toughest opponent yet in Ripley. Battling several obstacles throughout the week, UC dropped a 47-6 decision Friday night.
“They did a great job, and they have many great players,” UC head coach Scott Duley said. “I watched them in week one against New Albany, and the improvement on their defense, I think, has been great.”
A local runner had the opportunity to compete on one of the toughest off road cross country courses in the state and excelled as part of the State Games of Misssissippi.
