    County rivals squared off on Tuesday, with West Union boys and East Union girls winning their respective matches.

    A couple of weeks ago, I decided to issue a friendly challenge to the New Albany and Union County schools to see who has the most school spirit. After two weeks and great competition, I’m pleased to announce the winning school in the inaugural Gazette Student Section Challenge.

  • Ingomar tops WU on the road

    With the absence of Steven Foster in the lineup, Ingomar did not skip a beat, defeating West Union, 63-33, on Saturday.
    “He got a scratch right under his eye and was told not to play for the next week,” coach Norris Ashley said. “The doctors do not want sweat or anything causing an infection.”
    Stepping up for the Falcons was Henry Foster, who scored a game-high 24 points. Ingomar held a 10-point lead after the first quarter, and expanded that lead to 16 at the half.

  • UCSD votes to move varsity football to East Union

     The debate has finally come to an end with the Union County School District voting 3-2 in favor of moving the varsity football program from county-wide to East Union during its December meeting on Monday night.

    District 5 board member Wayne Mahon opened the discussion, bringing a motion on the table for only the varsity program to move to East Union. Each member of the board voiced their respective opinions, citing reasons for and against dissolving the co-op program.

  • West Union tops North Pontotoc in bowling

    West Union earned a sweep of North Pontotoc, bowling at Action Lanes in New Albany on Monday.
    After splitting against the Lady Vikings on Nov. 17, the Lady Eagles edged North by one pin, 1077-1076.
    West Union won the first set of games, 1059-824, led by Callie Baggett, who finished with a total score of 516. Lauren Brewer led West Union in the second set of games, finishing with a 415 overall.
    Kurt Stevens led the Eagles, bowling a 664 overall, as West Union won the first set, 3-1 and swept North Pontotoc in the second set, 4-0.

    Myrtle defended its home court on homecoming, earning a sweep over East Union on Saturday.

  • NAHS picks up road wins

    John Stroud’s young squad is still trying to find its way. Currently at 4-3, the Lady Bulldogs overcame an early nine-point deficit, defeating Ingomar, 55-39, on Tuesday.

  • Foster leads Falcons over South Pontotoc

    Ingomar found its way back to the win column thanks to the efforts from Steven Foster.

  • Holly Springs uses big second half in win over Hawks

    Holly Springs erased an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Myrtle, 73-64, on Tuesday.
    Jonathan West led Myrtle to a 36-28 lead at the break, scoring 15 points and making three triples in the first half, and the Hawks led by as many as 13 in the second quarter.
    Paris Scruggs and DeAndre Griffin led the charge for Holly Springs in the third quarter, scoring 20 of the Hawks’ 22 points. Scruggs tied the game at 45 early in the third, and Griffin gave Holly Springs the lead off his three-pointer, 48-45.
