  • Lady Hawks drop contest versus Pine Grove

Myrtle softball dropped its second game of the season in a 5-2 decision against Pine Grove last Saturday.
Pine Grove opened the game scoring four runs off three consecutive singles by Jesse Collins, Maddie Ericksen and Laken Hill. Myrtle was in position to answer that in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs, but were shut down, leaving three runners stranded.
Kiana Judon put the Lady Hawks on the board in the third, plating Brianna Brassell with her single, and Kelsey Freeman added to that in the fourth, allowing Keely Chunn to score off her single.

  • Lady Hawks fall short in north half semifinals

Myrtle fell just shy of a trip to Jackson, and the careers of four seniors came to an end after H.W. Byers held on for a 50-43 win on Friday.

Having won the first two match-ups this season by 19 and 23 points respectively, Byers seemed well on its way to a repeat performance, ahead by 10 points in the second quarter. The difference this time was the tenacity and drive of the Lady Hawks, which went on an 8-0 run and eventually cut the Lady Lions’ lead to two, 25-23, at the half.

  • Urchins season ends at home

One of the primary goals for the Urchins this season was to make it out of the first round of the north half playoffs. Facing Coahoma AHS on Monday, East Union had a chance and remained close through the first quarter, but the Tigers eventually pulled away for the 65-35 win.

  • Lady Hawks back on track in north half

Myrtle got back on track after two losses in last week’s division tournament, easily moving on to north half with a 77-50 win at Tremont on Monday.

“We had a bad week last week, but our goal is to win a state championship,” coach Chris Greer said. “I told these girls, in order to do that, we’ve just got to take care of business, one game at a time.”
