  • Falcons top Myrtle for division lead

The first wave of division games have passed, and Ingomar finds itself in a good position after defeating Myrtle, 7-2, on Saturday.

  • West Union pounds Falkner, 23-3

One bad inning on defense did not define the Lady Eagles, as West Union pounded Falkner, winning 23-3 in five innings on Saturday.

Falkner came out scoring three runs off one hit and two West Union errors, but that deficit was erased quickly in the bottom half of the inning, as the Lady Eagles scored six runs.

  • Lady Hawks rally for win at Ingomar

Myrtle was down early, but never out, chipping away for its fourth division win, 12-9, at Ingomar on Thursday.

The Lady Falcons came out scoring six runs in the first, led by an RBI double by Amy Fooshee, followed by an RBI triple by Erin Wall. Ingomar maintained the lead until the sixth, when Myrtle scored five runs off as many hits.

  • Urchins pick up division win against Hamilton

East Union evened its division record on Saturday, earning a win over Hamilton, 2-1.

“Huge win for us. Hamilton’s basically had our number over the last few years,” coach Chris Basil said. “They’ve had the upper hand on us the last couple of years, and they’ve had some great teams; kids that have signed and gone on to major colleges. We needed this, and this is tremendous for our kids. We needed something to get us over the hump.”

  • Lady Bulldogs win 2012 Union Co. softball tournament

Not in eight years have the Lady Bulldogs won the Union Co. tournament in softball. That changed on Saturday, and for two seniors, it is, what they hope, a sign of good things to come for the remainder of their final season at New Albany.

“We tried to modify our attitudes, set them aside and work together, and by doing that, we’ve now learned that we can win things like this,” Jalanna Cameron said.

  • East Union wins Union Co. baseball championship

Cody Dillard has pitched in many big games for East Union and showed poise in the Urchins’ final game of the Union County Tournament. After striking out seven in a loss to Saltillo last week, the junior left-hander came out on Friday silencing the New Albany bats en route to the Urchins’ 6-5 win, capturing the 2012 Union County Tournament title.

  • Urchins, Falcons earn weekend wins

East Union split in its games on Saturday, defeating Thrasher, 11-1, and falling, 4-3, to Saltillo.

Against the Tigers, Dustin Pratt and Cody Dillard had two hits each in the loss. Saltillo opened the scoring in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Chase Hill. The Urchins cut the lead to one in the bottom half of the fifth off a two-run shot by Pratt. Pratt later hit a double in the seventh and scored off a single by Cody Dillard, making it 4-3.

  • Lady Hawks pick up second win

Myrtle evened its record at Oxford on Friday, using a personnel change for the Lady Chargers to its advantage.

Down 2-1 in the fifth, the Lady Hawks scored five runs off four hits after Oxford switched catchers due to injury. After the change, Myrtle capitalized off several wild pitches and passed balls behind the plate.

  • County standouts earn MAC all-star honors

A quartet of basketball standouts will represent New Albany and Union County in this year’s Mississippi Association of Coaches all-star games.

  • Lady Eagles hold on, handing East Union first loss

The youth of West Union pitcher, Brittany Taylor, was far from noticeable on Monday night. The sophomore allowed two runs, but struck out nine in the Lady Eagles’ 3-2 win over East Union.
