  • Union County playoff recaps: Friday

     With game two and the season on the line, Mason Maxey wanted the ball in his hands.

    After Thursday’s game one loss at Kosciusko where the senior gave up four runs on the mound, Maxey not only came in to relieve Friday’s starter Colt Smith, but also got the game-winning hit for the Bulldogs in extra innings, 4-3, to force a deciding game three on Saturday.

  • Union Co. baseball playoff recaps

     Tyler Dowdy’s no-hitter for Ingomar capped Thursday’s playoff action, as three Union County teams picked up game one wins.

    Dowdy pitched the complete game against Smithville, finishing with eight strikeouts in the Falcons’ 4-0 win.

    Brady Cox put Ingomar on the board in the fourth, bringing in a run off of a sacrifice fly out, which was followed by a two-run single by Dillen Speck. A Smithville error in the fifth brought in Ingomar’s fourth run, plating Dowdy.

  • Area teams prepare for next round of playoffs

    Thursday marked the beginning of the next round of the 2012 playoffs for baseball and softball. Union County has eight teams still competing for a shot at a state championship; five in baseball, three in softball.

  • East Union track wins first divison championship

    In its first year competing in the sport, East Union earned division titles for both the track and field events last week at Byhalia.

  • Ingomar takes opening series against Ethel

    Ingomar fought off Ethel, earning a 14-4 game one win at home on Friday.

    The Lady Tigers struck first, scoring two runs off three hits, but the Lady Falcons answered quickly with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, led by an RBI double by Morgan Kelly.

    A wild pitch in the top of the second allowed Ethel to tie the game at three, but Ingomar pulled away in the third, scoring five runs. Five Lady Falcon batters were hit in the inning, two more walked, and Ingomar added runs in each of the remaining innings, finishing in six innings.

  • Myrtle sweeps Ray Brooks, advances to play TCPS

     Myrtle wrapped up its opening weekend in the playoffs, earning a two-game sweep over Ray Brooks on Friday.

    “It was a solid performance. We had two good pitching performances, throwing strikes; threw the ball well,” Myrtle coach Robert Gordon said. “All aspects of the game were played well, and I’m pleased with our effort.”

  • 2011-2012 All-Union County basketball team announced

     Twenty athletes were named All-Union County, selected by the coaches at each school this week.

    Leading the girls’ selections are five from Myrtle, that led the Lady Hawks to the 1A north half semifinals.

  • Falcons clinch division with win at WU

     Ingomar had a solid game plan for Friday night’s divisional showdown at West Union. That plan, however, was not to pitch Tyler Dowdy the entire game. The junior, coming off of an injury, ended up pitching the complete game, finishing with 13 strikeouts, leading the Falcons to a 6-2 win.

    “We had to bite the bullet and decided to see how long he could go,” Ingomar coach Andy Wilbanks said. “He did a good job, and we’re trying to build that pitch count and stamina up. He had a heck of a game.”

  • Norris retires

    One question has been debated for several years, regarding the coaching career of Ingomar’s Norris Ashley. The long-time coach of the Falcons answered it on Monday, retiring from the school after 41 seasons, 43 overall in coaching. For the state’s winningest basketball coach, this was an easy decision.

  • Myrtle standout signs with Northwest

    Myrtle basketball had its second signee on Monday, as Halle Knowles signed a letter of intent to continue her career at Northwest Community College.
