  • Area teams compete in local softball tournament

Weekend rain could not spoil last Saturday’s Robertson’s Sportswear Tournament at BNA Bank Park. The day-long event featured each of Union County’s teams against some of the best competition in Northeast Mississippi.

  • East Union rebounds against Myrtle

The Lady Urchins rebounded from a disappointed weekend setback to Mooreville by defeating Myrtle, 7-1, on Tuesday.
After falling 17-0 to Mooreville on Saturday, Stephanie Hardy put East on the board in the first, and behind five hits in the second, the Lady Urchins built a 4-0 lead.
Myrtle’s run came in the sixth inning after the Lady Hawks loaded the bases with two outs and walked in a run.
East Union responded, doing the same in the top of the seventh, loading the bases and scoring on a single by Tianna Castillo and walking in two more runs.

  • Urchins pick up historic win at Hatley

The East Union Urchins had a shaky but successful start for their football season opener against Hatley on Friday night.

Hatley trounced the Union County team last year and, with that memory in mind, the Urchins soundly beat the Tigers, 45-20, giving the school its first ever win.

East Union got off to a hot start, recovering a fumble and scoring a touchdown in the first two minutes of the game and leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, but penalties and substitutions would hinder the Urchins throughout the rest of game.

  • South Pontotoc tops Lady Eagles in softball

West Union was unable to hold off the Lady Cougars’ offense, falling 12-8 to South Pontotoc on Tuesday.
Lacey Higgins highlighted the opening inning with a base clearing triple, adding to South’s 1-0 lead, making it 4-0.
Over the course of two innings, the Lady Eagles tied the game at four with RBI hits coming from Hannah McQuary, Grace Rutledge, Julianna Garner and Gina Beth Conlee.
South Pontotoc broke the tie in the fourth, scoring four runs off three straight hits from Shelby Luther, Breanna Kitchens and Lindsey Jaggers.

  • Softball begins for area schools

Slow pitch season officially began last Saturday, and area teams spent the day at a preseason tournament at Myrtle.

  • Area runners kick off new XC season

The start of the 2012 cross country season is still a month away, but area runners gathered this week at East Union, preparing for the upcoming year.

Fifty local athletes spent the week at the school, where they worked with coaches, both in the classroom and outdoors, something East Union head coach Nathan McLellen feels will get the runners excited for the season.

  • Excitement surrounds East Union football

East Union is one week away from opening the school’s first football season, but the energy and excitement are the same from when the team was county-wide.

Opening against Hatley next Friday, the Urchins are anxious for the new year as well as a little revenge from last year’s loss in the season opener.

  • Blythe named East Union girls' basketball coach

The timing is finally right for Josh Blythe, who takes over the girls’ basketball team at East Union.

Blythe pursued the job before eventually taking the slow pitch softball position last school year. With the departure of Shelly Parman to Nettleton, the school choose to stay in house, with Blythe taking the position.
