  • Urchins win north half championship

    Monday night was one of redemption for East Union, and in the end, destiny was fulfilled, and the Urchins are set to play for the 2A state championship in Pearl.

    For Alex Boland, redemption came on offense Monday night. Miscommunication hurt the senior catcher and pitcher Cody Bo Dillard during Sunday’s game two of the series. The result was Baldwyn bringing in the game-tying run, and later in the game, the Bearcats would take the 2-1 lead and hold on to win by that final.

  • Urchins, Bearcats to battle in game three of north half

    Baldwyn has forced game three for the 2A north half championship, holding on for a 2-1 over East Union.

    Twice postponed due the weather, both teams took the field on Sunday, and it was a showdown between pitchers Dustin Kirk and Cody Bo Dillard.

    Reggie Richey registered the first hit for either team in the second inning, and but the Urchins were on the board first in the fourth inning. With two outs, Tray Davis hit a double and was plated by Tyler Hutcheston to put East Union up 1-0.

  • Lady Eagles end season as runners up in 1A softball

    West Union found itself in a strikingly similar situation in Saturday’s game two of the 1A state championships. Much like Friday’s first game, the Lady Eagles built a lead but were unable to sustain that, falling 13-7 to Nanih Waiya.

    After watching the first three batters go quick in the first inning, West placed two on base in the top of the second, scoring its first run on an error. The Lady Warriors would tie the game in the bottom half on a solo shot by Ryan Holdiness, but the Lady Eagles went back in front, scoring two runs in the third.

  • Urchins win first game of north half

    East Union is one game away from making it to Pearl after taking a 1-0 series lead against Baldwyn on Thursday.

    The Urchins jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first, as Trey Barkley led off with a triple. Loading the bases for Tray Davis, the first run was brought in on a sac fly. Executing good base running, Dustin Pratt stole home to put East up 2-0.

    Baldwyn got one of the runs back in the top of the second on an RBI single from Conner McKay.

  • Lady Eagles fall in game one of state championship

    Ridgeland-- Errors hurt West Union in game one of the 1A state championships on Friday, as Nanih Waiya took a 1-0 series lead after a 15-6 win.

    After the Lady Eagles took an early 4-0 lead after the first inning, the Lady Warriors worked its way back into the game, scoring its first run in the second inning and tying the game on a three-run home run by Ryan Holdiness in the third.

    Nanih Waiya sent 11 players to the plate in the fourth, scoring seven runs off five hits and three West Union errors.

  • East Union baseball advances to north half championship

    With their backs against the wall and facing elimination, the Urchins’ offense delivered in back-to-back games, winning its playoff series with Hatley and advancing to the north half championship.

    Last Thursday, the Urchins were held to only three hits, as Russ Johnson earned the win on the mound, 3-0. In that game, the Tigers would score on back-to-back RBI singles in the first and later in the fourth inning.

  • West Union softball wins north half championship

    The dugout was dead silent, and there was nothing but intense focus as West Union was a game away from making the 1A state championship in softball. The Lady Eagles are two years removed from its last trip to Jackson, and memories of that series carried with the team as they faced the defending champion, Smithville.

  • West Union advances to north half championship

    Finally being able to step on the field after recent delays from the weather, West Union wrapped up its north half semifinal series with a 12-2 win in game three against Vardaman on Tuesday.

    The day opened with the conclusion of game two, where the Lady Rams were in front 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. West Union added one more run on an error, but the Lady Rams scored four runs in the top of the fifth, capped by a base-clearing double by Laken Lucius.

  • Lady Hawks' season ends against Smithville

    Defending 1A state champion Smithville advanced to the north half championship after earning a sweep of Myrtle over the weekend.
    The Lady Seminoles took a 6-0 win last Thursday in game one, shutting out the Lady Hawks despite allowing seven hits.
    Pitcher Audrey Kent fell to 15-3 on the season with the loss, and Amber Cook had multiple hits to lead Myrtle.
    Smithville scored five of its runs over the first three innings, taking a 3-0 lead in the first. Breanna Edgeworth led the Lady Seminoles with three hits in the win, including a double.

  • Myrtle falls to Fighting Irish

    The Hawks’ season came to an end on Monday, as Greenville St. Joe earned a sweep in the series after a 6-4 win at Myrtle.
    St. Joe took game one 11-1 last week, but Myrtle came out strong  scoring the game’s first two runs in the opening inning on RBI hits from Zack Perkins and Austin Floyd, making it 2-0.
    An error in the Myrtle outfield along with an RBI double by Raines Rester tied the game at two in the top of the third, but Myrtle again went in front in the fourth inning, 4-2.
