  • Coldwater wins showdown at Myrtle

  • Pirates pull away for win over New Albany

New Albany had its chance Saturday night against Pearl; it was just the missed opportunities and the three-point shooting of the Pirates that made the difference in the 65-58 loss.

  • Byers hands Lady Hawks first loss

Myrtle’s run at perfection came to an end on Tuesday at the hands of H.W. Byers in a highly anticipated divisional showdown that did not have one of Byers’ top players in Alexis Hardaway, who was out with a high ankle sprain.

While the game was close early on, Myrtle fell out of sync as Jenna Jordan went out in the first quarter with an injury and Aspriona Gilbert was on the bench late in the second quarter with three fouls.

  • Bulldogs, Lady Hawks claim UCT championships

For two players, their senior year at the Union County tournament was about redemption.

On the girls’ side, Aspriona Gilbert and Myrtle snapped a three-year losing streak to New Albany to claim its first title since 2008. The UCT has become accustomed to this match-up, and the 58-36 win improved the Lady Hawks’ perfect record to 21-0.

“I feel like I did back when we finally beat them after a while,” Gilbert said. “It feels real good.”

  • Union County Tournament: Day One

The three-time defending champs had a tough start on its quest for a fourth consecutive title. Led by 41 points by Jazmine Spears, New Albany pulled out a 64-52 win over West Union to open the 2012 Union County Tournament on Thursday.

Spears scored 12 first quarter points, helping the Lady Bulldogs to a 17-8 lead, but West Union stayed within striking distance with 11 first half points from Samantha Bridges.

  • Lady Hawks hold on to remain undefeated

Win number 18 may have been difficult, but not only did the Lady Hawks prevail, they gained valuable experience playing in only its second close game of the season.

“We played good, and that’s the first time this season that we’ve seen a true man-to-man,” coach Chris Greer said. “I thought Aspriona (Gilbert) did good, and Jenna Jordan not only hit some big three’s for us, but she did a good job of guarding Kaelin Kneeland. I thought it was a good game.”
