Defending 1A state champion Smithville advanced to the north half championship after earning a sweep of Myrtle over the weekend.
The Lady Seminoles took a 6-0 win last Thursday in game one, shutting out the Lady Hawks despite allowing seven hits.
Pitcher Audrey Kent fell to 15-3 on the season with the loss, and Amber Cook had multiple hits to lead Myrtle.
Smithville scored five of its runs over the first three innings, taking a 3-0 lead in the first. Breanna Edgeworth led the Lady Seminoles with three hits in the win, including a double.

Three of the four teams remaining in the 2A north half playoff race come from Region 1, and this weekend will be a division showdown for East Union after the Urchins swept Riverside at home on Saturday.
In game one, the Urchins took a quick 1-0 lead only to have Riverside tie the game in the bottom of the third. East Union added five runs over the final two innings to take the win, 6-1 and a 1-0 series lead.
Cody Bo Dillard led the Urchins’ offense with two hits, and Duck Pratt had three RBI in the win.

Ingomar jumped to a 1-0 series lead against Tupelo Christian Prep last Thursday, and after falling in the second game, the two teams are scheduled to close out the series at Ingomar tonight.

It has been a great week for former Union County standouts, as they’ve achieved many accomplishments at the collegiate level.
The top two stories in today’s paper highlight what the current high school athletes are doing, including Molly Hale’s individual title in girls’ golf. Often falling off the radar are the athletes that have graduated and moved on, most playing at Northeast and a couple at Itawamba Community College.
