  • Urchins hang with Hawks, Ingomar...

    New Albany's student section chanted "four more years" in response to Jazmine Spears' terrific showing, as the Lady 'Dawgs downed Ingomar 63-40 Friday night.

    The eighth grader led all scorers on the night, tallying 27 and setting up their rematch with Myrtle for the county championship.

    An early three-point shot by Tierra Lucas gave New Albany the 9-3 advantage in the third, and it was never close, as the Lady Bulldogs led throughout the game.

    East Union 39 (G)

    Kayla Stevens brought her "A-Game" to East Union as she scored a game-high 21 points to help pace the Lady Falcons to a 52-39 victory in the opening game of the tournament.

    The Lady Urchins took a 11-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but saw the Lady Falcons rally to take a 28-23 lead by halftime before quickly putting the game out of reach in the second half behind a 10-point effort from Stevens in the third quarter.

  • Epting receives championship ring

    East Union's Austin Epting was presented his 2008 State Cross-Country Individual Championship ring during the Union County Tournament.

    The senior has enjoyed a stellar career for the Urchins.

    The 2008 championship was the second in his career as he also won the Individual Championship in 2004.

    His career-best time was 16:40 at the East Union/Myrtle Challenge while he recorded a time of 16:42.8 at the State Cross-Country meet.

  • County district takes next step...

    The next step for the addition of a football and band program for the Union County schools is underway after the school board had an unanimous vote on January 6 to add a county-wide program. The process has begun in finding both a band director, as well as a head football coach so the county can start the program as early as this semester.

  • Myrtle picks up win, WU and EU...

    Walnut 65 West Union 63

    Hunter McQuary stepped up for the Eagles with 24 points, but it would not be enough as West Union fell at home versus Walnut 65-63 Tuesday night.

    After leading by seven at the half, Walnut scored 22 in the third to take a 50-39 lead into the final quarter. The Eagles would rally in the final frame, outscoring Walnut 24-15, but it would not be enough  as West Union falls to 4-16.

    Wesley Jumper scored 19 in the effort.For Walnut, Shauuille Perry led with 29, followed by Ryan Alexander and Santez Small, each with 10 points.

    The Lady Eagles bounced back into the win column with a 20-point victory over Walnut Tuesday night.

    Kimberly Jumper and April Rollins both scored 11 for West Union, followed by Robyn Taylor with 10.

    West Union's defense held Walnut to single digits in scoring for the first three quarters, as they only allowed 16 points at the half, while opening a 25-16 lead at the break.

    The Lady Eagles pulled away with a 10-3 advantage in the third to improve to 16-5 on the year.

  • NAHS soccer sweeps Tish. Co.

    New Albany 7 Tish. County 0 (girls)

    After a tough loss to Corinth last week, NAHS rebounded with a 7-0 win over Tishomingo County.

    Jenna Davis opened the scoring when she converted a Kellie Skinner cross. Shelby Brown quickly followed with her first of four goals off a pass from Estefany Fernandez. Shelby's other goals were one unassisted and two from the penalty spot.

    In between the penalty shots, Fernandez took another of Skinner's crosses finding the back of the net with a sizzling curving shot.

  • North Pontotoc rallies to beat...

    It's long  been said free throws can win or lose ballgames and the North Pontotoc Vikings proved that statement to be true on Tuesday against Ingomar.

    The Falcons got off to a strong start behind the hot shooting of Matt Purvis and the interior play of Zach Carnell, but things started to turn the way of the Vikings in the third quarter when Clay Kidd and Matt Purvis joined Carnell on the bench with three fouls each.

  • WU wins two straight in bowling

    West Union's bowling teams have started the new year off right, as they have won two straight matches after falling to Tupelo in December.

    The Eagles and Lady Eagles took on South Panola on January 6 and defeated the girls 5-3 and shutout the boys 8-0.

    Jessica Clark bowled a 170 to lead the Lady Eagles. Ashley Alexander's 377 was the high series in the match. Jessica Joyner also contributed with a 152 game in the first round of action.

  • Lady Hawks hand NAHS first loss...

    Aspriona Gilbert lived up to the hype as she had 24 points in Myrtle's 50-49 upset over New Albany Friday night.

    The Lady Hawks took advantage of Jazmine Spears' early foul trouble, as the Lady 'Dawgs leader picked up her third foul at the 6:05 mark in the second quarter.

    "We're a different team when Jazmine's on the floor," NAHS head coach John Stroud said. "We were able to build a six to eight point lead when she was on the court both times, but when she only plays 15 to 16 minutes of a 32 minute game, it hurts us."
