  • Lady Eagles advance to next round

    Potts Camp 45 (girls)

    Claire Wilkerson led with 10 on the night as the Lady Eagles keep their season alive by defeating Potts Camp 48-45 in the first game of the night.

    A 21-point fourth quarter helped to get the West Union back into the game, as they found themselves down 37-27 going into the fourth.

    Only allowing the Lady Cardinals eight points in the final frame, West Union moves on to play top-seeded Coldwater Thursday night.

    Queen Dean led Potts Camp with 12, while LaMonica Ingram added 11.

  • Lady Hawks soar, East Union ends...

    The Lady Urchins saw their season come to an end Monday night as they fell to New Site 70-44 in the first round of  the Division 1-2A tournament.

    East Union saw early success in the first, as a three pointer by Sunnie Knighton gave the Lady Urchins their only lead of the game at 6-4.

    Ashley Hampton would extend that lead to 8-4 before the Lady Royals would go on a 14-0 run, capped off by numerous turnovers by East Union.

  • Falcons, Lady Falcons advance in...

    It wasn't easy, but the Lady Falcons were able to hold off a late game rally from Vardaman to advance to the semi-final round of the Region 3-1A Tournament after a 45-38 victory over the Lady Rams on Monday.

    Vardaman found their rhythm on offense to quickly cut into the Lady Flacons 24-16 halftime lead before sophomore Shelly Grisham put the team on her shoulders by scoring nine of her game-high thirteen points in the third quarter to help Ingomar take a 33-26 lead into the final frame.

    The Lady Bulldogs advance to semi-final action as they defeated Tishomingo County Monday night, 60-33 in the first round of the division 1-4A tournament in Itawamba County.

    Leading 17-9 after the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs were able to extend their lead to 32-15. The tough New Albany defense did not allow Tish. County to score in double digits until the final frame, but by then, the Lady Bulldogs already secured a comfortable 47-21 lead.

  • East Union holds preseason...

    Baseball season is reving up, and fans had a first glimpse of their teams over the weekend at East Union's pre-season jamboree.

    With the deduction of games teams are allowed to play in the regular season, many schools choose to hold jamborees, much like you would see in football, as a way for teams to prepare for the regular season.

    The Urchins have hosted the day-long event for 2 years, and this year's teams included Ingomar and West Union.

    East Union's foul trouble could have cost them the game, but missed free throws and easy baskets came back to haunt the Lady Bearcats, as East Union held on for the 63-52 win on senior night.

    The Lady Urchins committed 10 fouls in the third quarter after building a 34-22 halftime lead. Up 46-28 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Baldwyn worked their way back into the game, and cut East Unions lead to eight with 2:32 remaining in the game.

    The Lady Falcons connected on five-of-eight three-point attempts in the first quarter to take a 15-13 lead over the Lady Rams before outscoring Vardaman 17-8 in the second quarter to take a 32-21 lead at the half.

    Vardaman saw the Lady Falcons' lead balloon to 42-29 in the third, but foul trouble and turnovers late in the quarter opened the door for a late game rally for the Lady Rams in the fourth quarter.

  • WU competes in three-team...

    West Union's bowling teams recently playing in a three-team match with Starkville and East Webser, wih the Eagles and Lady Eagles coming out on top in both.

    On the girls side, West Union shut out Starkville and East Webster, winning all lanes, 8-0.

    Monica Gallik bowled the high series with a 356, while Jenna Nolley scored the high game with a 164.

    Also contributing in the win for West Union was Mironda Simmons, who bowled a 149 in her first game, Jessica Clark with a 155 in her second game and April Joyner with a 158 in her third game.

    Union and Prentiss Counties matched-up over the weekend in the Prentiss-Union Clash in Baldwyn. This year's showdown featured several close games, and in the end, the counties tied the day at 3-3.

    West Union 61 Jumpertown 60

    Wesley Jumper had a slow start, but his herorics in the final seconds gave West Union the 61-60 win over Jumpertown in the opening game of the Prentiss-Union Clash last Saturday.

    Jumper scored 28 in the game, but had a hard time finding his shot early in the game, as West Union found themselves down 29-17 at the half.

    Saturday's 12th annual Robertson's Sportswear Challenge reminded many in the area that girl's basketball can be just as challenging and exciting as their male counterparts as several Northeast Mississippi teams faced off for a few nailbiters, including Union County's Lady Urchins.

    Briarcrest Christian 55 Itawamba AHS 45

    Itawamba's Noel Prestage connected on her first two shots of the game, but Briarcrest defense proved too much as they held the sharp shooter scoreless for the rest of the contest to pick up the 55-45 victory in the opening game of the day.
