  • West Union student inspires team...

    Despite recent tragedy, one local athlete has taken what could have been a devastating situation and turned it into inspiration for his team, coaches and school.

    On January 21, Ben Kirk was assuming his role on the West Union baseball team during their practice. Kirk was gathering balls during a hitting drill and was struck by a bat, resulting in him losing his left eye.

  • Lady Hawks win over Thomastown

    Aspriona Gilbert scored a career high 36 points as the Lady Hawks defeated Thomastown 81-67 Monday afternoon in Jackson. Myrtle advances to take on the number one seeded McAdams from the south on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

  • Division Champions!

    Myrtle 58

    Coldwater 55 (girls)

    The Lady Hawks picked up the division 3-1A title Friday night, but not without a fight from the Lady Cougars, as Myrtle held on for the 58-55 win.

    Myrtle jumped to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter, as Amber Williamson and Beth Goolsby combined for four three-pointers. Coldwater would go on an 11-3 run to close the first frame to pull within eight.

  • Ingomar out duels Ray Brooks to...

    It wasn't easy, but the Ingomar Falcons used a 6-of-9 performance from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to eventually pull away from the Ray Brooks Tigers to pick up a 66-62 victory in the North State play-in game on Tuesday.

    Ingomar (19-16) battled their way out to 19-16 first quarter lead before taking a 39-30 lead by halftime.  Ray Brooks (10-9) started the second half strong by outscoring the Falcons 18 to 11 in the third quarter to pull within two points as Ingomar clung 50-48 lead heading into the final frame.

  • Hawks upset Pine Grove, will...

    The road to Jackson will have to go through Myrtle, as the Hawks upset Pine Grove Tuesday night, earning them the right to host the North Half Tournament this weekend.

    With the score only at 8-5 after the first quarter, Myrtle exploded offensively, scoring 22 in the second to take the 27-20 lead at the half.

    Another 20 points by the Hawks in the third quarter helped to put away Pine Grove and advance Myrtle into the next round of the playoffs.

    Russ Yates led the Hawks with 22, followed by David Wilson with 11.

  • WU, Myrtle take third place in...

    West Union 42 Ashland 29 (girls)

    Despite hitting a rough patch this season in division play, the Lady Eagles redeemed themselves, taking third place in division 3-1A after defeating Ashland 42-29. The Lady Eagles made it to Friday night’s consolation game after defeating Potts Camp 48-45 Thursday night.

    “It’s a big relief,” West Union head coach Andy Kirk said. “We started off real fast this season and we kind of dropped off in division play. This is one of the toughest divisions in the state.”

  • Falcons, Lady Falcons fall on...

    Calhoun City 71

    Ingomar 58 (girls)

    The Lady Falcons were unable to bounce back after falling to Houlka, 60-34, Thursday night, as Calhoun City won the consolation game of the 2-1A division tournament last Friday.

    Kayla Stevens led Ingomar with 18 on the night, while Maggie Cobb added 14.

    Ebony Williams led all scorers with 27, followed by Diantrae Miller with 13.

    Okolona 66 Ingomar 63 (boys championship)

    Norris Ashley's squad fell short of another division title Friday night, as the Falcons lost 66-63 to Okolona.

  • Hawks outlast Ashland, East...

    Myrtle 76 Ashland 58 (boys)

    The Hawks were able to comeback after falling behind early versus Ashland Tuesday night.

    Tony Hill hit three three pointers in the first quarter to give the Blue Devils the early advantage. Ashland also took advantage of early foul trouble by Myrtle's Jimel Judon, who had to sit out the second quarter after picking up two early fouls in the first.

    After another three pointer by Ashland at the buzzard, the Hawks found themselves down 21-19 after one.

  • Lady 'Dawgs eye region...

    New Albany hit their first major bump in their road to redemption during the Region 1-4A Tournament at Itawamba Community College on Wednesday in the form of the Itawamba AHS Lady Indians.

    The Lady Indians handed New Albany a 78-66 road loss in late January that left a bitter taste in the mouths of Coach John Stroud and company, but their would be no repeat the second time around.

  • Lady Eagles advance to next round

    West Union 48

    Potts Camp 45 (girls)

    Claire Wilkerson led with 10 on the night as the Lady Eagles keep their season alive by defeating Potts Camp 48-45 in the first game of the night.

    A 21-point fourth quarter helped to get the West Union back into the game, as they found themselves down 37-27 going into the fourth.

    Only allowing the Lady Cardinals eight points in the final frame, West Union moves on to play top-seeded Coldwater Thursday night.

    Queen Dean led Potts Camp with 12, while LaMonica Ingram added 11.
