  • County schools advance to second...

    Union County started the 2009 playoffs with four teams, and all area schools advanced to the second round after dominating last week.

    West Union, East Union, Ingomar and Myrtle all swept their first round series, and will be in action again this weekend.

    East Union

    Sweeping Leflore County last week, the Urchins advance to the second round of the 2A state playoffs this week.

    East Union downed the Tigers on the road Thursday, 19-2, then took the series, 14-2, on Friday.

  • Lady Eagles soar into Semifinals

    A close series ended as a blowout, as West Union advances to the North Half Semifinals after demolishing Pine Grove 21-3 in five innings on Tuesday.

    Saturday's split in the doubleheader set up Tuesday's must win, and West Union had no problems, as strong hitting, backed by excellent pitching in the circle propelled the Lady Eagles into the next round.

  • County teams rev up for baseball...

    County schools are preparing for the start of the playoffs in baseball this weekend, as West Union, East Union, Myrtle and Ingomar will all be in action.

    Division winners West Union will start at Pine Grove on at 7:00 Friday, then host them on Saturday at 2:00.

    The Eagles struggled earlier this season, starting 1-8, but head coach Ashley Russell is proud of his team's efforts, especially in the ladder part of the season.

  • NAMS opens new weight room/...

    New Albany Middle School recently held an open house to showcase their new band hall and boys locker room and weight room.

    Started in 2007, NAMS drew initial plans to expand the locker room and weight room due to the growth of the football program.

    "We've averaged about 100 kids the past two to three years," NAMS football coach Buddy Hall said. "We applied for a grant, which said we would receive if we expanded on an existing building."

    The Bulldogs were in action again on Tuesday, as they competed at the Tupelo Country Club. The boys took second place behind the host Golden Wave, while the girls finished first. Below are the results.

  • Remembering Paul Davis

    Kind hearted and intent with a passion for football. That’s how friends remember the late Paul Davis, who passed away March 31. Known mostly in this area as the former head football coach at Mississippi State, many would be surprised to learn that before roaming the sidelines in Starkville, Davis began his coaching career in New Albany.

  • Lady Eagles split v. Pine Grove

    The Lady Eagles find themselves in a familiar position, as their season comes down to a game three match-up. Last season, West Union played a decisive third game in every round of the playoffs, and after Saturday’s doubleheader with Pine Grove, will do so once again on the road at Pine Grove.

    West Union took the first game, 5-1 after scoring four runs in the sixth. Down 1-0 in the fourth, the Lady Eagles plated their first run, then tacked on their insurance runs to take the win.

  • Myrtle drops two, West Union...

    Lafayette 11 Myrtle 5

    Montez Phillips led the 4A Commodores over Myrtle on Saturday, downing the Hawks 11-5.

    Myrtle held the 2-1 advantage before Lafayette scored the next nine runs to take the lead and the win.

    Myrtle was held to six hits, while giving up 10, and the Hawks had four errors in the game.

    West Union 15 Myrtle 4

    Hunter McQuary led the way with two homeruns, as the Eagles defeated Myrtle 15-4.

    Leading 6-4, the Eagles exploded with seven runs in the fourth inning.
