  • NA golf places second,...

New Albany matched their 2008 finish last week in the 4A State Championships in Amory, but this time the results could come back in favor of the Bulldogs after a challenge.

The 'Dawgs finished second in this year's tournament, falling to Itawamba, but the scores of one of the Indians' golfers could reverse the results, giving New Albany the title.

  • Eagles fall at State

West Union fell in the State Championship to St. Aloysius 6-0 Thursday and 13-2 Friday night.

Be sure to read the New Albany Gazette on Wednesday for the complete series recap.

  • West Union Miracle

The biggest series ever to take place for Union County came down to a deciding game three and ended in dramatic fashion as West Union defeated the defending 1A North Half Champion Ingomar Falcons to advance to their first ever state championship Monday night.

Ashley Russell’s squad took the 1-0 series lead after last Thursday’s 7-1 victory at home. A three-run home run by Taylor English set the pace in that first game, as Devin Brock held the Falcons to only two hits.

  • BMC working with city to bring...

New Albany may have more baseball and softball to look forward to in the future, as the city and Blue Mountain College are working on a contract allowing the college to play baseball and fastpitch softball at the Sportsplex starting in the Fall of 2010.

The Aldermen discussed the contract during their meeting Monday night, and BMC officials met on Wednesday, further discussing the possibility of using the Sportsplex.

  • NAHS tennis picks up state title...

New Albany High School brought a state title home last week in tennis, as the mixed doubles pair of Callie Creekmore and Luke Wilson defeated the Axton/Agee duo from Laurel 6-0,6-0 to finish first in the state.

Both Creekmore and Wilson were strong in singles this season, and coach Warner Creekmore took their strength individually and paired them together to bring a title back to New Albany.

  • Falcons, Eagles compete for golf...

Ingomar and West Union faced off in more than just baseball last week, as both schools sent teams for the boys and girls state tournaments in the Jackson area.

The 1A-3A girls tournament was held last Monday and Tuesday, with West Union being the only team from the north in the five-team competition. Also competing as an individual was Molly Hale of Ingomar.

With the 2009 season being the first for an all-girls team at West Union, coach Alex Scrimpshire was hoping for his team to gain experience, as two of the three members have only played since January.

  • Falcons rally versus Myrtle

The defending North Half champs stormed back to win a doubleheader Tuesday, as Ingomar advances back to the North Half Championship after defeating Myrtle 9-5 and 4-0.

After falling 6-2 last Friday, Ingomar coach Andy Wilbanks reminded his team to play like they have been all season and not to try to do too much.

“I told them just to play every inning, you know, pitch by pitch, and don't try to do too much,” Wilbanks said. “Everyone just play for Ingomar baseball and do their own part while not doing too much, and we'll be successful.”

  • Eagles, Falcons preparing for...

Everyone and everything is cooperating, except the weather.  That's been the story throughout the 2009 baseball and softball season, and with North Half scheduled to start on Thursday, the in-county series may be delayed until later in the weekend because of recent rains.

West Union and Ingomar are familiar with one another, as this series will probably go down as one of the biggest ever in Union County.

  • NAHS girls place at State, boys...

NAHS has worked hard over the last few seasons to become one of the dominant teams in golf, and both boys and girls are looking to add to their success with the state championships taking place this week and next.

The girls competed at Patrick Farms Golf Club in Brandon on Monday and Tuesday, and came away with a third place finish, improving from their fifth place finish in 2008.

  • 'Dawgs open spring practice

An experienced Bulldogs squad is back on the field this week, as spring practices have begun for area high schools. Returning all but four starters from last year's team, head coach Ron Price is excited about the leadership returning for 2009.
