New Albany High School brought a state title home last week in tennis, as the mixed doubles pair of Callie Creekmore and Luke Wilson defeated the Axton/Agee duo from Laurel 6-0,6-0 to finish first in the state.

Both Creekmore and Wilson were strong in singles this season, and coach Warner Creekmore took their strength individually and paired them together to bring a title back to New Albany.

The defending North Half champs stormed back to win a doubleheader Tuesday, as Ingomar advances back to the North Half Championship after defeating Myrtle 9-5 and 4-0.

After falling 6-2 last Friday, Ingomar coach Andy Wilbanks reminded his team to play like they have been all season and not to try to do too much.

“I told them just to play every inning, you know, pitch by pitch, and don't try to do too much,” Wilbanks said. “Everyone just play for Ingomar baseball and do their own part while not doing too much, and we'll be successful.”

NAHS has worked hard over the last few seasons to become one of the dominant teams in golf, and both boys and girls are looking to add to their success with the state championships taking place this week and next.

The girls competed at Patrick Farms Golf Club in Brandon on Monday and Tuesday, and came away with a third place finish, improving from their fifth place finish in 2008.

The Eagles are one step closer to earning a spot in the 1A North Half Championship after demolishing Calhoun City 17-3 Friday night.

West Union jumped on the board first, posting a four run first inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs.

Wesley Jumper started the inning with a double, and Bo Garrett next reached after being hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second, Caleb English belted a three-run homer, followed by a solo shot by Hunter McQuary, giving the Eagles the 4-0 lead.
