  • McDonald honored by the Myrtle...

    Honoring a young man who passed away in 2008, the Myrtle community gathered last Thursday to dedicate their new little league field at the school.

    Austin McDonald was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 at the age of 11. It was also at this time that the community had plans of building a new little league field behind the school's softball facility. After learning of McDonald's illness, administrators gathered along with Hawks coach Robert Gordon and it was decided that field would be named in honor of the brave child.

  • Locals participate in NEMBCA all...

    Union County was well represented in the Northeast Mississippi Basketball Coaches Association (NEMBCA) All-Star games last Saturday at Northeast Community College. Four athletes helped lead their respective West teams to wins, with one tying a record in the 1A/2A girls match-up.

    Maggie Cobb of Ingomar, along with Amber Johnson and Merica Turner tied the record for most three-pointers in a game, as the West rolled 83-48. Cobb finished with 15 points in the game.

    East Union's Stephanie Dillard also participated in the game and finished with six points.

  • BMC names NAHS' Fowler as...

    Curt Fowler will be at the helm of the newly added Toppers baseball program at Blue Mountain College, the school announced May 22.

    In a press release by BMC, the school talked about their plans to add both baseball and softball starting in the 2010-2011 school year.

    Lady Falcons hand West Union their first loss of the slow pitch season

    In one of the most exciting games of the regular season, Ingomar bettered West Union 14-11, handing the Lady Eagles their first loss of the 2008 season.

    Both teams combined for 19 runs over two innings after Ingomar took the early 3-1 advantage. West Union responded, going ahead 6-3 in the fourth, and 11-4 in the fifth before the Lady Falcons' seniors stepped up in the final innings.

    10. Ingomar defeats West Union, dethroning the defending North Half champs in the slow pitch playoffs.

  • Rascals prepare for opening day

    First pitch is only another week away, as the inaugural season of the Cotton States Baseball League is coming together.

    CSBL held their draft Sunday night, with players being distributed among the four teams. While many athletes are still playing at their respective colleges and universities, coaches are working even harder to complete their rosters in preparation for the June 1 opening day, including New Albany's own Tallahatchie Rascals.

  • MHSAA rejects NAHS' appeal

    NAHS received word Tuesday afternoon from the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) regarding their appeal on the results of the 4A State Tournament held last week. MHSAA ruled in favor of Itawamba, giving them their second state title in three years, while New Albany finished in second. NAHS coach Robert Garrett released this statement on MHSAA's decision.

    "First, I want to congratulate the Itawamba team, Chad Ramey on his 1st place finish, and Coach Nanney on a great 1st season as their coach.

  • Eagles fall at State

    West Union was not able to complete their astonishing run in the 2009 playoffs, as the Eagles fell to St. Aloysius 6-0 and 13-2 in the state championship last Thursday and Friday.

    After falling in game one, the Eagles were able to score the first two runs of game off of an RBI single by Hunter McQuary and a sac fly by Taylor English. The Flash were able to respond, tying the game in the third, the pouring on 11 runs over the final two innings to run rule West Union.

  • Lady Hawks pick up state title

    Myrtle found themselves in a familiar position, as the Lady Hawks ran away with another state title in track, the second in a row and fifth out of the last nine years.

    After falling to Potts Camp in the Regionals, coach Chris Greer calmed his team down and helped them regain their focus heading into the state finals.

  • NA golf places second,...

    New Albany matched their 2008 finish last week in the 4A State Championships in Amory, but this time the results could come back in favor of the Bulldogs after a challenge.

    The 'Dawgs finished second in this year's tournament, falling to Itawamba, but the scores of one of the Indians' golfers could reverse the results, giving New Albany the title.
