  • 'Dawgs take consolation at...

    New Albany picked up two wins on Tuesday to take the consolation bracket of the Northeast Mississippi Coaches Association for Better Baseball tournament in Tupelo.

    Athletic Director Shane Sanderson worked with the team on Monday and Tuesday, seeing a lot of good things from the 'Dawgs in their three wins.

    "We've been coaching by committee the past week, and I liked what I saw out of them," Sanderson said. "I saw a lot of excitement from them for the first time in a while, so that was encouraging."

  • Lady Eagles compete in Florida...

    The Lady Eagles are hard at work this summer, as they recently played in a summer basketball tournament in Florida, as well as hosting their own shoot around at West Union.

    Head coach Andy Kirk took his squad for the second year in a row to participate in the Emerald Coast Sports Camp in  Florida, where the Lady Eagles finished with a 7-2 record overall, while rising seniors Kimberly Jumper and April Rollins picked up outstanding player honors.

  • Getting to Know: Rascals'...

    Brancy Cummins drives a long way to play for the Tallahatchie Rascals. The Delta State senior hales from Drew, Mississippi, a good two-plus hours from New Albany.

    “It's a good drive for me to get here for every game, but it's definitely worth it,” Cummins laughed.

    A graduate of North Sunflower Academy, Cummins went straight to Delta State, but was not a member of the Statesmen's squad until this past season.

  • Bulldogs' camp excites...

    With many summer leagues and activities taking place,  Ron Price and his staff at NAHS continued their tradition, as they held a youth football camp at the high school.

    Started three years ago by former head coach Bubba Davis, the week-long event is designed to teach the very basics of the game, while getting the youth in New Albany interested in playing.

  • Blackhawks eye county title

    Summer baseball is in full swing, and one local team is looking and working toward the future of the sport at Myrtle.

    The Myrtle Blackhawks U9 team were organized four years ago by Tim Maharrey and Robert Gordon with the hopes of keeping the kids together on the same traveling team.

    “We wanted to keep all of our kids in Union County,” Maharrey said. “They all go to school together and play together, so we thought why not start this and keep them together. So far they’ve done real well.”

  • NAHS competes in NEMCBB...

    New Albany’s baseball team has worked hard this past week, participating in the Northeast Mississippi Coaches Association for Better Baseball (NEMCBB) tournament at North Pontotoc High School.

     “Basically we play in the summer to get better for the spring,” John Ferrell said. “We only have 12 days to play with the team now during the summer, so we try to schedule as many double headers and tournaments as we could to get in as many games as we can with them.”

  • Rascals split with GT Jets

    Tallahatchie used their bats to avenge their first loss of the season Monday night, downing Golden Triangle 8-3.

    The two teams squared off last Thursday, with the Jets taking the 18-10 win, belting 14 hits on the Rascals’ pitchers, who posted a 4.50 ERA going into the contest.

  • Top Notch t-ball continues...

    Every summer kids from across the county participate in summer league baseball, T-Ball and softball. At the New Albany Sportsplex, there is a special group that is not as widely known except by those involved.

    The Top Notch T-Ball program for children with special needs has been a part of the Sportsplex for several years. Teaching equality for the children involved, volunteers work with the kids, as all feel strongly about giving these children the same advantage any other has.

  • Getting to Know: Rascals'...

    Myrtle native Jimel Judon made news upon his arrival in the BNA Bank Cotton States League. With his 6'6, 270 lbs. frame, he looks like all of the other athletes he is competing against, except for the fact he is still in high school.

  • The Waiting Game

    For the past three days, thousands of major league baseball hopefuls have sat in front of their televisions waiting for the call and the hope to play at the next level. Late Wednesday morning, one Union Countian received that call and an opportunity to continue his baseball career.

    Ingomar's Josh Hodges has long been praised as one of the best athletes in the county, with his 6'7 frame and 95 mile per hour fast ball etching his name among the elite at the high school level.
