  • Rascals extend lead over Dealers...

M.J. McWhorter  brought momentum from the all-star game to Sunday’s battle for first place as the Rascals blanked the North Delta Dealers 6-0.

McWhorter’s 2-for-3 performance capped with two RBI helped pace Tallahatchie’s (12-5) offense in the much needed win to stay atop the Cotton States North Division.

McWhorter’s first RBI came in the third, as he plated Tyler Wilson to take the 1-0 lead. The Rascals would add two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, all on North Delta (11-5) errors.

  • NFL player gets NA excited...

Union County saw a lot of excitement over the weekend as the NFL’s Terrence Metcalf hosted a day-long football camp at New Albany High School last Saturday.

New Birth Community Church, along with NAHS came together to host the former Ole Miss Rebel and Chicago Bear to raise money for a new family life center at the church. Clarksdale was the location for the camp the past three years, but due to conflicts, Metcalf was put in touch with NAHS head coach Ron Price to bring the camp to Union County.

  • Rascals fall 2-0 versus Tupelo

Tupelo needed only two runs to top the Rascals Tuesday night, as netiher team had a productive night offensively.

Tallahatchie started the game with their only two hits, as Lee Wilson and John Stephens had back-to-back singles, but neither David Williams or Ben Wallis could bring the runners home.

Tupelo scored their first run in the second, as the Thunder loaded the bases after Matt Lewis and Tyler Vuncannon were walked, and Whit Whitten singled. The third walk of the inning placed Ladarius Cole on base, while plating Lewis, making 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

  • Cotton States All-Stars

Twenty-five athletes were named to the BNA Bank Cotton States League Sonic Drive-In All-Star roster, including three from Union County.

  • Nice catch: a good day at the...

I have heard consistently throughout this past year that I should write outdoors features. Now if you know anything about me, you would know that I have zero knowledge about hunting, fishing, etc., nor have I taken part in these activities. That is until this week. Union County, this is what you have been waiting for.

  • How to feed the masses

The folks at the New Albany Sportsplex are some of my favorites in the county, so any opportunity I have to work with them, I take it. When Johnny Epting approached me about helping out in the concession stands, I thought this would be a great opportunity for everyone to see the work involved in preparing food for the numerous sporting events at the Sportsplex.

  • Tallahatchie splits weekend bill...

The Rascals split with the GT Jets over the weekend, winning 7-4 on Saturday and dropping a 15-10 decision on Sunday.

David Williams went  2-for-4, while Chris Lucius was 2-for-5 in Sunday’s game.

The Jets went up 10-0 before the Rascals saw their first runs, and despite a strong effort, Tallahatchie’s comeback fell short.

The Rascals put up five runs in the fifth, scoring all five before registering their first out of the inning.

Myrtle’s Jimel Judon led with a double, as Tallahatchie had five hits and an error by the Jets.

  • Camp shaping future stars

Basketball season is still months away, but the courts throughout the county are filled for camps and summer leagues. The scene at Memorial Gym was no different Monday morning, as children gathered for the annual NAHS Bulldogs camp.

Bulldogs’ head coach Brad Gray and Coach Reed from the middle school have spend the last two weeks working with the youth in Union County during the Bulldogs annual summer basketball. Designed to teach the fundamentals and sharpen skills, the camp is broken into two weeks, both of which have been successful.

  • Lady Tigers head to nationals

A local 15U AAU team is prepping for the national tournament later this month. The Northeast Mississippi Lady Tigers currently boast a 26-4 record, along with several familiar faces to Union County.

Jazmine Spears and Kebrina Lucas of New Albany, along with Halle Knowles and Aspriona Gilbert of Myrtle are on the roster, and have made significant contributions to the team’s success so far.

  • Getting to Know: Rascals'...

Like many of the athletes playing this summer in the BNA Bank Cotton States League, John Stephens is looking for an opportunity to improve while playing close to home. The 5’10 outfielder from Ripley is currently a sophomore at Northeast Community College, and credits both his college and CSBL coaches for encouraging him to play this summer.

“I had to have a place to play this summer, and Coach Farris and Coach Basil got me to play here,” Stephens said. “It’s really the only place to play around this area.”
