  • Locals help Lady Tigers 15U AAU...

    The Lady Tigers 15U AAU squad took a seventh place finish after a slow start in the AAU National Tournament.

    Losing their first three games, the Lady Tigers picked up their first win versus the Arkansas Wings, 71-68, behind Katie Gavin’s 18 points. Union County’s Kabrina Lucas had 14 while NAHS teammate Jazmine Spears had 13.

    Northeast would win their next three games, including the championship in the consolation bracket, as Spears had 20 points in the Lady Tigers’ 71-50 win over Ohio.

    The Lady Tigers finished 4-4 in the tournament.

  • Stroud continues success

    A year after the announcement of his selection to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, John Stroud will be inducted this Friday during ceremonies in Jackson. Stroud, a West Union and Ole Miss alum, has made a name for himself as both a player and coach, and looks forward to the great honor he will receive this week.

  • Motivate for the future

    New Albany was well represented at the MAC tennis All-Star tournament in Jackson on July 17. The duo were of six athletes chosen from the north to participate in the tournament.

    NAHS graduates Karl David Capaning and Jacob Rowland took on Douglas Odom and Robbie Leigh of St. Andrews 8-6, despite trailing 5-2 early on.

    The duo later took their talents to singles action, as Capaning defeated Odom 6-4, 6-2, while Rowland defeated Leigh 6-3, 6-1, helping the north to an overall 5-2 victory over the south.

  • UCDA discusses growth for tennis...

    Looking at the future of soccer and tennis in Union County, the Union County Development Association (UCDA) met with both the county tennis and soccer associations to discuss plans to expand at the New Albany Sportsplex, creating new fields and courts for the groups.

    UCDA director Phil Nanney met with representatives from each the New Albany Soccer Association and the City Tennis Association Monday night, as well as New Albany mayor Tim Kent. The area under discussion is a 40 acre lot across Highway 78, where the Sportsplex is located.

    I am not in shape. At all. A lot of people ask how much I work out or what my diet is because of how little I am, but here is the secret: I have been blessed with an amazing metabolism. I decided that one of my adventures this summer would have to be to jump start a potential workout program for me, not for weight purposes, but more to be in shape. To do this, I enlisted the help of three  Union Countians who happen to be pretty decent cross country runners.

  • Washington living the dream...

    One local athlete is improving her game while gaining national exposure participating in an AAU summer traveling squad. New Albany’s Micha Washington stands out in a crowd with her 6’2 frame, which led the coach of the Mississippi Hoop Dream to pursue the Lady Bulldog for his squad.

    “I moved to the area this past year and I had the opportunity to watch New Albany play a couple times,” Dream coach Moses James said. “I liked her game and thought she would be a good addition to the squad, so I recruited her to join.”

  • Rascals closing in on top...

    Tallahatchie remains ahead of North Delta in  the BNA Bank Cotton States league despite falling to the Dealers, 6-3 Saturday.

    M.J. McWhorter went 2-for-3 in the game as the Rascals only had five hits on the day.

    Ethan Bright paced the Dealers’ offense with a perfect 3-for-3 day with three RBIs.

    Brad Luna (2-1) posted his first loss of the season allowing six runs off five hits with seven strikeouts, while North Delta’s Matt Shaw (2-1) picked up the win.

    The Rascals bounced back Saturday afternoon defeating the Jets, 5-2.

  • North division reigns in CS all-...

    Nick Vickerson’s clinched his MVP performance in the eighth inning, leading the Cotton States North Division to a 9-8 win over the Central Division on Saturday.

    Vickerson went 3-for-5 in the game with four RBI, including the go-ahead single that plated Ronnie Ferrell to break the 8-8 tie.

    The North Division got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the first inning, as the first four batters each had hits, including doubles by Drew Dillard and Vickerson. M.J. McWhorter also reached on a fielders choice and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Joel Rich.

  • Urchins’ new ball coach

    East Union will have a new face at the helm of their softball program in 2009-2010, as Kelly Robbins was recently named the new coach of the Lady Urchins, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience.

    The former Kelly Yates was an All-State selection in both softball and basketball during her tenure at Myrtle, where she won five state titles, taking the crown in four of her five seasons of softball, as well playing a part in the Lady Hawks’ 2003 state champion basketball squad, which also featured Armintie Price of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

  • NA native Richey wins derby title

    The first annual BNA Bank Cotton States League Sonic Drive-In Homerun Derby came down to two GT Jet teammates, one of which a native to Union County.

    New Albany’s Gardner Richey and Kyle Thornton of Ole Miss squared off in the derby finals after posting four and three long balls each. Ethan Bright was the only other contestant to homer in the derby, as he was third with two homeruns.

    In the finals, Richey and Thornton each belted three homeruns to end in a tie, taking the competition into a deciding third round, where Richey’s single shot gave him the title.
