  • ‘Dawgs run over Bears

    Bulldog fans had their first look at the 2009 squad last Friday night, as NAHS hosted their annual “Meet the Bulldogs” before a jamboree game versus Alcorn Central.

    The varsity ‘Dawgs, along with the junior high teams, varsity softball, cross country and band were all introduced, followed by exhibition the junior varsity and varsity exhibitions against the Bears.

    The JV team played a one quarter game, falling 2-0 on a safety with two minutes left in the game.

  • County football opens with first...

    Many Union Countians saw their dream come true Monday afternoon as the countywide football took the field for the first time. Around 90 kids were bussed to the New Albany Sportsplex, where the coaching staff spent the day teaching them basic warm-ups and fundamentals as a first step in fielding a team this season.

  • Reaching the next level

    A proven leader, a leader on the rise and a new face trying to make his mark on the team. There are many different stories on New Albany’s football squad this year, but all share the same goal of seeing the Bulldogs take their game to the next level in 2009.

    NAHS took the field last week for their fall camp and are preparing for their jamboree match-up versus Alcorn Central this Friday night. Walking around practice last Thursday, the ‘Dawgs were very upbeat and are ready to start the new season.

  • Local athlete turns teacher

    What do you get when you take two traditional sports and combine them? For one New Albany resident, you have a sport quickly generating interest, not only in Union County, but the Deep South.

    Kayla Pablic has long had a love for horses. While living in Pennsylvania as a young child, Pablic joined the local Pony Club with one of her friends. It was in this club that she learned of a sport, a discipline that would soon become her passion.

  • Bulldogs open 2009 football...

    Football is back in New Albany, as the Bulldogs took the field Monday for their first official practice of the 2009 season. With much excitement surrounded around this season, head coach Ron Price  has a team coming off one of the strongest offseason workouts he has seen since joining the staff at NAHS.

  • Batter up with New Albany Lady...

    A new face will grace the presence of the New Albany softball team this year. With her athletic 5’4 build and a fierce swing that scares even the best pitchers, she will be a force to be reckoned with this season, and she made her first appearance at Tuesday night’s workout at the high school.

    Actually this is all a lie, it’s just me, and I am pretty sure the only thing the team was scared of was me possibly hurting myself.

  • Rascals fall in championship

    The inaugural season of the BNA Bank Cotton States League had a fitting end, as the top two teams finished as the regular season and tournament champions.

    Tallahatchie took the league championship after finishing in first place, just ahead of the North Delta Dealers. However, the Rascals could not find their bats in the CSBL tournament, as North Delta took that title Sunday afternoon.

    The Dealers took care of business on Friday, as they won both of their match-ups, 3-1 over the Jets and 7-1 over the top seeded Rascals to advance to the championship game.

  • Locals help Lady Tigers 15U AAU...

    The Lady Tigers 15U AAU squad took a seventh place finish after a slow start in the AAU National Tournament.

    Losing their first three games, the Lady Tigers picked up their first win versus the Arkansas Wings, 71-68, behind Katie Gavin’s 18 points. Union County’s Kabrina Lucas had 14 while NAHS teammate Jazmine Spears had 13.

    Northeast would win their next three games, including the championship in the consolation bracket, as Spears had 20 points in the Lady Tigers’ 71-50 win over Ohio.

    The Lady Tigers finished 4-4 in the tournament.

  • Stroud continues success

    A year after the announcement of his selection to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, John Stroud will be inducted this Friday during ceremonies in Jackson. Stroud, a West Union and Ole Miss alum, has made a name for himself as both a player and coach, and looks forward to the great honor he will receive this week.

  • Motivate for the future

    New Albany was well represented at the MAC tennis All-Star tournament in Jackson on July 17. The duo were of six athletes chosen from the north to participate in the tournament.

    NAHS graduates Karl David Capaning and Jacob Rowland took on Douglas Odom and Robbie Leigh of St. Andrews 8-6, despite trailing 5-2 early on.

    The duo later took their talents to singles action, as Capaning defeated Odom 6-4, 6-2, while Rowland defeated Leigh 6-3, 6-1, helping the north to an overall 5-2 victory over the south.
