  • Late rally lifts Lady Eagles...

The last three outs may be the hardest to get. For the Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night, they saw their three-run lead against West Union disappear with one out remaining for the win, as the Lady Eagles edged NAHS in the 5-4 thriller.

“In that last inning, they got the big hits when they needed them,” NAHS head coach Michael Kelly said. “We played with a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of intensity with a good defensive ball game. We jumped out early on them, and we’ve got to work on finding our bats late in the game.”

  • 'Dawgs ready for rival...

New Albany will look to carry momentum from last week’s impressive performance, as they will be on the road facing their biggest rival in Ripley.

Ripley has won the last two meetings, including last season’s 27-14 affair at Kitchens’ Field, and the Tigers return many starters in 2009.

A different Lady Eagles’ team took the field in the Nettleton Tournament, as they avenged a preseason loss by handing the Lady Tigers’ their first loss of the season last Saturday.

Santana Taylor and Anna McCutchen had back-to-back RBI doubles, making it 7-0 before Webb’s three run shot extended the lead to double digits.

  • A new quarterback in the making

If Tyler Basil had any nerves before New Albany’s season opener last Friday, he did not show them. In his first game as the undisputed starter for the Bulldogs, the junior exploded for 340 total yards and accounted for all five of the ‘Dawgs touchdowns in their heartbreaking 41-34 loss to Booneville.

  • Late rally hurts Lady Rebs

Shalonda Reynolds had two homeruns, including a grand slam, but it would not be enough, as Blue Mountain defeated the Lady Rebels, 12-9 Tuesday.

Reynolds first in-park homer came in the first inning, plating Kayla Kolivas and giving Hickory Flat the 2-1 advantage.

Blue Mountain tied the game in the third and take the lead in the fourth off of three Lady Rebel errors.

Myrtle is looking to catch a break after several close losses to start the 2009 season. With Kossuth in town Monday, the young Lady Hawks stayed in the game, but again fell short, 8-7 in extra innings.

The Aggies started the game with two runs off of a double by Knepp and a single by Mayo. Myrtle scored their first run in the second after loading the bases off of a single by Brandi Smith and walks of Kandace Butler, Meshay Cox and Kaylee Farr.

  • Bulldogs ready for kickoff

The 2009 football season is set to kickoff this Friday, but the Bulldogs will take the field with heavy hearts for their opener against Booneville in the New Albany Classic.

NAHS elected to have an extra game this season, picking up the 3A Blue Devils in hopes that this match-up will help them better prepare for the remainder of the season.

  • Early season pains

Union County teams had a hard time picking up wins in the North Pontotoc tournament over the weekend. East Union, Ingomar and New Albany squared off in the day-long event, each struggling against their opponents.

    Ingomar

The Lady Falcons opened the day against the Lady Cougars of South Pontotoc, falling 9-2. Samantha Mayo went 3-for-3 in the game to lead Ingomar, and would carry that over into the Lady Falcon’s second game versus Walnut.
