  • McCullough lifts Lady Urchins on...

Amy McCullough has knocked several homeruns for the Lady Urchins this season, but none bigger than her three-run shot Monday, as East Union shutout Hickory Flat 9-0.

McCullough is one of six seniors that were honored after the game, and her homerun belted out of the park in the sixth gave the Lady Urchins their final three runs of the game.

  • Bulldogs get defensive

This season has seen several new faces stepping up, and last Friday was no exception, as New Albany posted their first shutout of the season, 35-0 over Independence.

Riley Alef was a force on offense and defense, as the ‘Dawgs defense continues to improve with the course of the season.

Kareem Brown opened the scoring late in the first with his first of three touchdowns, this one a four yard run, giving New Albany the 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

  • Rost inspires 'Dawgs

One of the biggest motivators for New Albany’s football team is a young man who will never hear the crowd cheer or his name called out. Despite his hearing loss, Michael Rost has served as a valuable part of the Bulldogs’ squad since his first days of playing in junior high. NAHS head coach Ron Price was then a special education teacher at the middle school and learned one of his students was interested in going out for the team. The result: a newfound friendship and inspiration.

  • NA travels to Delta to face M.S...

New Albany will hit the road this week, as they will travel to the Delta to take on M.S. Palmer this Friday. The ‘Dawgs have put in good practice despite the recent rains, and head coach Ron Price said this week’s opponent is a little easier to prepare for.

  • 'Dawgs defense ready for...

A confident Bulldog squad plans to take the field this week as they host Independence. Coming off of last week’s 33-12 showing, the improving defense will again have their hands full, as Independence runs a spread offense that has hurt the ‘Dawgs defensive unit so far this season.

  • UCSD discusses co-op program

The message from the Union County School Board and administration to parents was simple: for everyone to start looking at the district as a whole and not each individual school. That is what Union County Superintendent Ken  Basil said to the crowd gathered at Ingomar Monday night to discuss the county’s co-op programs of band and football.

The hour-long session included talks by Basil, band consultant Robert Plunkett and a question and answer session, giving parents of the students the opportunity to hear first hand from officials about future plans of the program.

  • 'Dawgs rebound with win...

Kareem Brown scored two touchdowns as the Bulldogs easily put away the defending 2A state champs 31-12 Friday night.

Brown stepped up for his first 100 yard performance of the season, rushing for 124 yards on 14 carries, capped off with his two-yard run in the second and a kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half.

  • Missed chances hurt NA

New Albany had a good day at the plate but could not produce runs as they fell at North Pontotoc, 5-1 Tuesday.

The Lady ‘Dawgs had singles by their leadoff hitters in four of seven innings, but left seven stranded throughout the game.

North Pontotoc jumped to a 2-0 lead after a double by Hannah Tate scored one and an error brought in Kelly Shumaker in the second inning.

  • Union County looks for repeat

When the 2009 cross country season begins this weekend, two county rivals and friends will begin battle as the defending state champions in 1A.

Myrtle’s girls and West Union’s boys picked up top honors in 2008, and both have a lot of depth for their respective squads. Myrtle will again be under the helm of coach Chris Greer, but a new face will lead the Eagles, as Alex Scrimpshire is now working with the team, and he inherits an experienced and excited West Union squad.

  • East Union wins first UCT...

No team has a clear advantage when it comes to the Union County Tournament, as East Union proved last Saturday. The Lady Urchins were more than ready to play, going 4-0 to claim the school’s first ever tournament title.

“They came out here ready to play today. They played hard and they played together, and they relaxed and had fun. It was just a great day overall for the girls.,” East Union head coach Kelly Robbins said.

The game of the day came when the two team’s faced off, as both were 2-0 going into the match-up.
