Fans gathered at H.W. Byers on Tuesday to watch a historical event, as Union County fielded their first football team in their inaugural game versus the Lions.

Union County’s squad competed in two games, a seventh and eighth grade junior high contest followed by a ninth grade junior varsity game. Byers showed experience, as this is the second year of their program, but the UC squad displayed improvement, as they have only practiced for about four weeks.

This season has seen several new faces stepping up, and last Friday was no exception, as New Albany posted their first shutout of the season, 35-0 over Independence.

Riley Alef was a force on offense and defense, as the ‘Dawgs defense continues to improve with the course of the season.

Kareem Brown opened the scoring late in the first with his first of three touchdowns, this one a four yard run, giving New Albany the 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

New Albany will hit the road this week, as they will travel to the Delta to take on M.S. Palmer this Friday. The ‘Dawgs have put in good practice despite the recent rains, and head coach Ron Price said this week’s opponent is a little easier to prepare for.

The message from the Union County School Board and administration to parents was simple: for everyone to start looking at the district as a whole and not each individual school. That is what Union County Superintendent Ken  Basil said to the crowd gathered at Ingomar Monday night to discuss the county’s co-op programs of band and football.

The hour-long session included talks by Basil, band consultant Robert Plunkett and a question and answer session, giving parents of the students the opportunity to hear first hand from officials about future plans of the program.
