  • UC football completes first...

Union County experimented with football, fielding their first team this fall and have now wrapped up their inaugural season, as they played Potts Camp last Saturday at Kitchens’ Field.

UC ended their first year falling to the Cardinals, 14-12 in the 7th-8th grade game and 20-18 in overtime in the 9th grade game.

  • New Albany Bulldogs, Lady Hawks...

Union County squared off in the annual UC Championship in cross country this past Saturday at the New Albany Sportsplex. Hosted this year by East Union, participants from each school faced off for bragging rights in the county.

Last year, East Union’s boys and Myrtle’s girls took home top honors, and the Lady Hawks defended their title with an overall score of 18, followed by East Union with a 48.

  • West Union wins North Half

Better late than never was the story for West Union Thursday night. Taking on county and division rival Myrtle for a spot in the 1A State Championship, it took the Lady Eagles until the decisive game three to get into their groove and take the series from the Cinderella Lady Hawks.

Jenna Jordan, Meshay Cox and Brandi Smith all had multiple hits for Myrtle, as they came from behind, 4-2 to take the 8-4 lead after the fifth off of RBI doubles by Jordan and Cox, and RBI singles from Laken Butler  and Kiana Judon.

  • Lady Eagles capture 1A state...

West Union swept West Lincoln, 14-3 and 7-2 Saturday afternoon to win the 1A state championship in slowpitch softball. Be sure to pick up a copy of Wednesday's New Albany Gazette for the complete recap.

  • Myrtle soars into North Half...

As Brandi Smith prepared to go to bat in the seventh inning of the Lady Hawks’ second game versus Wheeler Monday night, she asked her coach what she needs to do. With only one hit on the night to that point, Robert Gordon told her one thing, to just “knock the ball as hard as she could.” Poised, the senior stepped to the plate and delivered the biggest hit of the night for Myrtle, giving them a three-run lead against Wheeler and eventually the win.

  • Crunch time for NAHS

This week, the Bulldogs are facing a lot more than just North Pontotoc. With the Vikings, ‘Dawgs and Tishomingo County all with an 0-2 divisional record, it has become a tight race for the final playoff spot. At 5-2, North Pontotoc suprised many by not skipping a beat when joining 4A this season.

  • Team managers are "the glue...

Every Friday night, the fans see the players and coaches working hard throughout the game, but what they do not realize is the hard work that goes into getting the game together. That is where the student managers come in.

Jonah Jones, Billy Williams and Michael Christian are the three responsible for everything behind the scenes with New Albany football. It may not be the most glamorous job on the team, but it is one that all of them enjoy.

“I used to play football, but after I decided not to, Coach Price asked me to help out as a manager,” Jones said.

  • Myrtle shocks Smithville,...

A confident and relaxed Myrtle squad took the field Thursday and downed their rival and defending 1A state champion as a result.

Myrtle entered the 2009 playoffs as the two seed after falling to West Union last week, while the Lady 'Noles were in familiar territory as their divisional winners. Smithville is also the hump the Lady Hawks could not get over, falling to them the last two years in the playoffs, but none of that mattered with Myrtle sweeping the series 11-10 and 7-4.

  • Thursday Night Football

New Albany found themselves in an unfamiliar atmosphere, as they traveled to Itawamba for a Thursday night showdown with the top ranked Indians.

The Bulldogs could not get their offense going, as they watched several good drives pushed back to penalties, an area that head coach Ron Price has been trying to work on with his squad.

  • Lady Eagles advance to North...

West Union battled tough field conditions while playing on the road as they swept Pine Grove Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles advance to their second north half appearance in three seasons after downing Pine Grove 15-2 and 10-0, each in five innings.

In the first game, West Union outhit Pine Grove 14-5, as they opened the game with four hits, scored five in the third, one in the fourth and the final five runs in the fifth inning to run rule Pine Grove.
