West Union faced a young Ingomar squad, but the Lady Falcons put up a fight in the first round of the 1A state playoffs. The Lady Eagles eventually pulled away to sweep the series, winning 5-1 and 17-0 Tuesday night.

The county rivals traded runs in the first inning of game one, with Shelly Grisham bringing in Kate Webb, who opened the game with a leadoff double. West Union returned the favor in the bottom portion of the inning, as a sacrifice fly out by Rachel Baker brought home Kimberly Jumper, tying the game.

East Union continues their quest in the 2A playoffs after winning on the road at Hollandale-Simmons Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Urchins traveled to the Delta as the two seed from their division and struggled in their first outing, falling 4-2. Sunnie Knighton was the lone bright spot for East Union with a home run, but head coach Kelly Robbins said her team wasn’t prepared when they stepped off the bus for game one.

“It took us a little while to get warmed up, and once they were use to the different atmosphere, they warmed up and started playing like a team.”

New Albany still has a bitter taste in their mouth, as they are looking for revenge hosting Pontotoc this Friday in their divisional opener. The ‘Dawgs lost a hard fought battle on the road in 2008, losing 21-20 in two overtimes, only inches away from the win and possible playoff spot. With Homecoming festivities also taking place, the Bulldogs are prepared to enter their first division game.

Union County’s football team continues to make history as they picked up their first win in a 28-12 affair at Falkner last Thursday night.

The county team held a 6-0 advantage at the half, and opened up their scoring attack in the second half in the winning effort.
