  • NAHS seeks win for playoff birth

Not since 2005 has New Albany football had a winning season, but all of that can change with a win over Tishomingo County this week. The ‘Dawgs will be on the road for their final regular season game, a match-up that has not gone well for them in the past. With a youthful Tish. squad this year, New Albany hopes to capitalize and reach the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

  • Red Raiders' speed too much...

The top 4A team in the state showed up at Kitchens’ Field last Friday night and proved why they are one of the best in the area, as Shannon topped New Albany 30-7 to remain undefeated.

Shannon started early with a 39-yard touchdown reception from Legilbert Bogan to Donovan Rogers, and the Red Raiders kept building on their momentum.

Lawrence Zinn sparked the Bulldogs with a fumble recovery in the first, as Shannon only held a 6-0 advantage after the opening quarter.

  • All in the family

Cody Stubblefield is living his dream coaching the game he loves after playing in collegiate ball. The added bonus: number 55, younger brother, Collin.

Cody brings an impressive resume to the Bulldogs’ coaching staff, as he was a member of successful squads at Itawamba Community College before playing Division I football at Memphis. Now apart of New Albany’s staff, he enjoys learning from the Bulldogs’ staff.

  • 'Dawgs ready for Shannon

Shannon comes to town this week as the top team in 4A, but the Bulldogs will hope to be the first team to slow down the high-powered Red Raiders offense. Talking with defensive coaches Rolandus Cox and Scott Duley, they have worked hard with their unit this week, finding what they hope are the right matches to Shannon’s many weapons.

  • Union Co. Sweep

Area cross country teams gathered at the New Albany Sportsplex last Saturday for districts 1-1A, 2-1A and 1-2A championships. Based on the results of this meet, teams will qualify for the state championships next month. Myrtle girls and West Union boys entered as favorites, and each took their respective divisions, along with Myrtle’s boys, West Union’s girls and both East Union squads.

  • State Champions!

West Union traveled to Jackson last Saturday determined to pick up their first state championship in slow-pitch softball. Still burned from their last appearance in 2007 that saw them go down two games to one to Bogue Chitto, an experienced Lady Eagle squad featuring eight seniors took on West Lincoln. The Lady Bears are also seasoned with  seven seniors and were runners-up in 2008, falling to Smithville. With the stage set for a memorable championship, West Union did not disappoint, taking the first game, 14-3 in five innings.

  • NAHS to honor football seniors

NAHS will honor their 12 seniors Friday night, a group that head coach Ron Price has challenged to continue building the foundation for the team. Price, along with assistants Scott Duley, Rolandus Cox and Josh Davis spoke about this year’s senior class.

  • Dressed to impress: NAHS'...

On any given Friday night, Tyrone Conner and Neal Sanford can be seen in the stands getting the crowd pumped up and wearing some of the most unique outfits.

From disco to the Jackson 5, this duo has long been the entertainment at NAHS football games, and they are quite popular among the fans as I could hardly get in two words without someone stopping to talk to them.

“The teachers love it, the fans love it and we even have our own fans,” Conner said.

  • NAHS holds final division...

New Albany made a strong statement Friday night, downing North Pontotoc 42-20 to take sole possession of the final playoff spot in Division 1-4A.

Kareem Brown set the tone for the game on the opening kickoff, take a fumble by the Vikings back for the game’s first touchdown at the 11:48 mark. New Albany struck twice more in the opening quarter on a 20-yard reception from Tyler Basil to Taylor Goode and on a short run by Eric Johnson to take the commanding 21-0 lead after the first.
