  • Myrtle splits with Desoto Central

    Jenna Jordan downed a three with five seconds remaining, but Myrtle could not complete the comeback, falling 59-56 to Desoto Central Tuesday night.

    Capping off a 30 point fourth quarter for the Lady Hawks, Myrtle found themselves down 27-18 at the half, and kept the Lady Jaguars from scoring until the 5:45 mark, going on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 29-22.

    Desoto Central would go up by 11 in the quarter, but Jordan would help start the comeback in the final period, as her free throws made it 43-38 early in the fourth.

  • Jumper picks up POY honors for...

    For the second year in a row, West Union’s Kimberly Jumper was named the top player in division 3-1A for slowpitch softball.

    Helping guide her team to their first ever 1A state championship in the sport, Jumper’s coaches, Andy Kirk and Lisa Bogue and Ashley Russell were also named the coaching staff of theyear, as voted by the other division coaches.

  • Rebels, Lady Eagles take WU...

    East Union 57, Hickory Flat 44 (girls)

    Hickory Flat and East Union opened this year’s West Union Round Robin with an exciting match-up previewing what they will face in divisional play this year.

    The Lady Urchiins took the early 16-12 advantage, as Amy McCullough connected on two three pointers in the period.

    After watching the Lady Rebels tie the game, East Union went on a 5-0 run to take the 30 to 23 lead into the half.

    Outscoring Hickory Flat 19-9 in the final frame, East Union picked up the 57 to 44 win, making them 1-0 in the tournament.

  • NAHS picks up sudden death win

    Pleading with his team for someone to step up and be a leader, NAHS soccer coach Taylor Nichols saw a different squad take the field in the second half of their Saturday match-up against Amory.

    Down 2-0, Nichols spent the half reminding his squad that they were better than how they were playing and just how easily they could find themselves back in the game.

  • Lady 'Dawgs top Columbus

    Starting the game with chants of “They don’t know us,” New Albany flexed their muscles, downing 6A Columbus, 57-39 Friday night.

  • Graham lifts EU to win over Lady...

    Tasha Graham was given a chance at redemption in the final seconds of the Lady Urchins’ Thursday night match-up versus Myrtle. Graham  missed a potential game winning shot for East Union in their one-point loss to Ingomar earlier in the week, but head coach Nathan McLellon went with her hot hands and she responded with a three-pointer that sent the game to overtime.

  • Judon signs with Ole Miss

    Family and Friends gathered on Wednesday, as Jimel Judon made his move to the next level, signing with Ole Miss Baseball. Judon will not be going far away from home, which was one of many factors in his decision. A love for the Rebels program, which made it to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2009, guided the Myrtle native to Oxford.

    “I really love the atmosphere, as far as baseball. It’s just a great place,” Judon said.

  • Lady 'Dawgs pick up first...

    The Lady Bulldogs picked up their first win of the 2009 season in a 3-1 showing versus Corinth Tuesday night.

    Corinth took the early 1-0 before New Albany took over. The Lady’Dawgs first score came from seventh grader Kristen Olson, who was assisted by Kellie Skinner. The second score was from Estephany Fernandez, who put a direct free kick in the back of the net, and the scoring was wraped up by Callie Creekmore after converting on a throw-in by Brittany Ellett.

  • 'Dawgs lose to Myrtle at...

    Jimel Judon had 24 points, as the Hawks held off a comeback by the Bulldogs, 66-58 Friday night.

    Malcolm Spears opened the game for New Albany with a three-pointer, but Myrtle was led by four points from Judon, David Wilson and Beau Cummings, giving the Hawks the 14-9 lead after the first.

    Will Gregory sparked the Hawks in the second with two three-pointers, but New Albany held close, going on a 6-0 run after going down 19-11.

  • Cross Country Champions

    Two schools were crowned state champions last Saturday, as East Union and Myrtle picked up top honors at the MHSAA cross country championships.

    Myrtle swept 1A action, taking the title in both boys and girls.

    West Union’s Devin Brock won the overall title, finishing first with a time of 18:18.90, but the next four runners were represented by Myrtle, as Justin Pickens, Bryan Cook, Heriah Dodson and Will Gregory rounded out the top five.

    Reed Williams of West Union was also a top 10 finisher, finishing right after the pack from Myrtle in sixth.
