  • New Albany sweeps Lafayette at...

    The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 in division play, fighting off a second half surge by Lafayette, defeating the Commodores, 65-55, on Tuesday.

    Tied at 27 at the half, the Bulldogs went ahead by seven early in the third quarter, preceding a 16-0 run by Lafayette, giving the ‘Dores a 44-36 lead. Montreal Nabors hit three triples in the frame, including one to close the quarter.

  • Area teams compete in the Hotbed...

    West Union opened the annual Kiwanis Hotbed Classic with an exciting game against Kossuth. Despite the efforts of RJ Coleman, the Eagles dropped a 57-55 contest, with the senior leading all scorers with 23 points.

    Coleman helped the Eagles jump out to a 10-point lead, 22-12, after the first quarter, scoring 12 points. Down 9-4 in the frame, the Eagles outscored Kossuth, 18-3, and Tyler Wooley made it a double figure lead with his three-pointer at the end of the quarter.

    Pontotoc started quickly, and despite a strong showing in the second half, New Albany was unable to overcome the early deficit, falling 6-4, in the second round of the 4A soccer playoffs.

    Less than 10 minutes into the match, Rafael Vidana had the Warriors ahead, 2-0, but Anthony Fernandez cut that lead to one in the 15th minute. Pontotoc scored three more times before the end of the half, Vidana scoring once more, along with Luke Littlejohn and Diego Pizarro.

    Helping the Falcons to its first Union County championships since 2010, Ingomar’s Devonte Williamson earns Player of the Week honors, particularly for his performance against East Union.

    Against the Urchins last Friday, Williamson dropped 22 points in the 65-60 semifinal win.
    “He’s our emotional and energy leader on the team,” Ingomar head coach Jonathan Ashley said. “He leads us by example, and he hustles on every play. He’s a hard nosed player and consistently performs well for us.”

Playing for three different coaches in as many years and falling short of a state championship appearance, Fernandez said that one of the toughest moments came in losing in the first round of the playoffs last season.

    Amid the excitement of the beginning of the playoffs, the Lady Bulldogs were challenged with a first round opponent in Florence, the defending state champions in 4A. Despite staying with the Lady Eagles throughout the first half, New Albany’s season came to an end with a 3-0 loss on Wednesday night.

    The Lady Bulldogs have consistently showed improvement over the last three seasons. First, the goal was to reach the playoffs, then advance out of the first round. Having already accomplished these goals in recent years, New Albany won its first division title on the girls’ side after an impressive weekend, beginning with a 3-1 win over Corinth last Thursday night.
