  • Difficult loss still on the minds of New Albany

The Bulldogs do not need a lot of motivation for their game this week at Lafayette. With the packed crowd and excitement surrounding last season’s battle of unbeatens, New Albany was unable to top the tough Commodore squad, led by Jeremy Liggins. Using that loss as motivation throughout the offseason, the Bulldogs are more than prepared to hit the field tonight.
“It was a big disappointment. We played soft and had a lot of turnovers and miscues and the motivation was just to get better and come out and beat them this year,” senior Cade Simmons said.

  • Former Lady 'Dawg continues career at MC

Given the success of the Lady Bulldogs over the last few years, it’s hard to believe John Stroud has only his first player to move on to the collegiate ranks.

  • Cross country season underway

This weekend, Union County will host its first cross country meet of the year, serving as a preview to what we can possibly expect for the county championships in two weeks.
The Southern Tees Challenge, formally the East Union/Myrtle Challenge, will take place at BNA Bank Park, bringing in 21 local teams for the event.

  • Leaders of the pack

The girls of East Union’s cross country team are best described as a family. Working hard and pushing one another, they’re easy to spot at races, because they’re all packed together, a method that has worked well for the defending 2A state champions.
“If we run as a team, we’ll be OK,” Katie Rowan said. “We’re really good about running as a pack. We run as a family, and we push each other and try to stay together in a race.”

  • West Union set to celebrate 50th anniversary

This weekend, West Union will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school. Focusing on the athletic side, the school has much to be proud of, and former coach and current Union County Superintendent Ken Basil highlighted many memories from his tenure at the school.
Coaching at West Union from 1993-2001, Basil took on most sports at the school, working with boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball and was there when golf was introduced to the athletic program. School pride is what he enjoyed most about his time at West Union.

  • Newsome quietly leads NA offense

The smaller guys seem to be the ones that pack the most punch when it comes to the running game at New Albany. Following Kareem Brown and Kelvin Worship is junior Boston Newsome, who is quietly leading the Bulldogs’ offense three games into the season.

  • 'Preston's Pit Crew' running for a good cause

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has, for decades, helped children of all ages battle cancer and other catastrophic diseases, and locally, one child has received the help of not only this hospital, but the New Albany community as well.

  • Friday night is 'Day time'

If you’re looking for Spencer Day on the sideline, he’ll be easy to spot, off to the side, standing alone. And he would rather it be that way, as did his predecessor.
The junior has jumped into the leading role of the Bulldogs’ offense, a spot that has been familiarly filled by Tyler Basil. He’ll admit there’s pressure, but he’s taking everything in stride.

  • Longtime coach ready for another season

As New Albany enters the  new football season, Assistant Coach Bob Monroe begins his 40th year in education, spending more than 25 of those on the sidelines coaching.
So what keeps this longtime coach in the game?

  • New school year and a magazine

I’ve thought of several ways to go about my first column of the new school year, and it seemed best to take this time to do a little housekeeping business from the summer.
I’ll start by saying I’m thrilled for this weekend and the start of the new softball and football seasons. Summer is both a good and bad time for me as I get the much needed rest and relaxation from the previous school year, but let’s be honest, I’m over that in about a week, then anxiously awaiting the day I can hit the ball fields again.
