  • Thankful for a great year

I’ll keep things brief this week since there’s not much to talk about given the holidays.
I want to take this time to thank everyone for another tremendous year for me in Union County. Since next Friday’s issue will be the last of the year, I will take that time to list some of my favorite sports memories from 2011.

  • Football 'Dawgs receive postseason honors

For the third consecutive year, New Albany has placed athletes on the All-State roster in 4A football, an honor attributed to not only the players, but the coaching staff.
Voted on by the coaches during the state championships in Jackson, the list was released last week for all six classifications of the MHSAA and the MAIS.
Receiving the honor for the Bulldogs this year are seniors Cade Simmons and Riley Alef, who were each second team selections.

  • Remembering Amanda Price

It’s times like this where we are unable to grasp how the human mind sometimes works and what could cause someone to inflict pain upon, not only a family, but an entire community.

  • Siblings lead West Union bowling

West Union has built a tradition in bowling and uniquely has a sibling trio contributing to the success of the program.
Callie and Dalton Baggett entered this season as the captains for the Eagles and Lady Eagles, and for them and their younger brother, Chandler, bowling is just second nature as it is a sport they have participated in since they were young children.

  • 2011 Student Section Challenge

With basketball season beginning to heat up in the county, I’m excited to announce a friendly competition I’m holding for the schools.
From Nov. 28-Dec. 6, the Gazette is going to hold the inaugural Union County Student Section Challenge, to see who has the most school spirit of the county schools.
I have set aside four games over the next week and a half, allowing myself to see each of the five schools. This list has been sent to each of the schools, hopefully in enough time to have a good showing for each.

  • The right to pray at games

Last month, school districts across the state received a letter from the Freedom from Religion Foundation more or less threatening the districts and its employees who allow prayer before sporting events. This is something I never thought much of nor realized the impact it would eventually have.
While at the Cleveland-New Albany game last Friday night, it was the first time I witnessed what, I guess, will become the norm for schools in the area.

  • Time is now for decision on county football

With the discussion of what will happen next with the county football team back on the table, I find it most important to take the time and explain all aspects of the matter so that there is no misunderstanding.

  • County teams prepare for state cross country championships

Cross country will close its season in Clinton tomorrow, and if history repeats itself once more, we’ll have a couple of state champions in Union County by the end of the day.
The county has three district winners and four district runner up teams competing, as well as a host of runners very capable of claiming the individual state title, or at least placing in the top 10.

  • Preparing for basketball season

Ready or not, it’s already basketball season, and the hotbed is gearing up for the new year with several preseason jamborees taking place this weekend.

Beginning today, Myrtle will host East Union, Ingomar and Pine Grove, while Hickory Flat and New Albany will host jamborees on Saturday.

  • A new meaning to homecoming for Bulldogs

Homecoming has a lot more meaning for the Bulldogs this year as they are working toward taking the number two seed into the playoffs.
“We’re looking to win out and finish second so we can have home field advantage and trying to perfect everything and tweek everything on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, so when we get to the playoffs, we’ll have perfected everything,” senior Riley Alef said.
