  • NEMCABB all-star game selects area athletes

Baseball season may be over, but we still have a couple more opportunities to watch some of the area’s best players compete.

  • Tennis excitement in New Albany

There’s a lot of excitement surrounding tennis in New Albany this week, as the Bulldogs are set to host the north half championship against Lafayette on Friday, and outside of the high school, you may have noticed how well the new courts at BNA Bank Park are coming along.
Talking with NAHS tennis coach Warner Creekmore, she spoke of the both topics, focusing of course on her team’s big match versus the Commodores.

  • Kirk's successful season at ICC

Andy Kirk has already made a stellar reputation for himself in Union County. Leading West Union softball to a state title and working with East Union last school year, Kirk moved up in the coaching ranks this year, taking over the fairly young softball program at Itawamba Community College.

  • Locals find success in rabbit dog hunting

The sport of rabbit dog hunting has brought some recent success to a couple of locals that I feel is more than worthy of mentioning.

  • Honoring Coach Ashley

Earlier this week, we learned of the retirement of long-time Ingomar basketball coach, Norris Ashley. This closes an important chapter in not only Ingomar sports, but Union County and Mississippi athletics as well.
When I started here in 2008, I talked with friends about the job and tried to find out as much about the area as possible. The first thing I was told about was Norris; his legacy and his position as Mississippi’s all-time winningest basketball coach.

  • Dowdy returns for Falcons; division play heating up

Three weeks ago on Tuesday, Ingomar baseball took a huge hit in losing junior pitcher Tyler Dowdy after a fall in practice that broke his arm. What appeared to be a season-ending injury turned out to be only a minor setback, as Dowdy returned to the mound on Monday night against H.W. Byers.
“I went to Dr. Lewis, and I was going to have to have surgery, but he was able to reduce the break, and they said I didn’t have to have surgery,” Dowdy said.

  • Local working to promote running in North Mississippi

Bo Boatner grew a love for running at an early age, and after a hiatus from the sport, has returned to competition, recently running in  the USA Cross Country Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Boatner began running as a teenager under the influence of his uncle. He entered not knowing how long he would last or if he would even enjoy the sport, but it was not long before his competitive nature took over.

  • Brothers pursuing tennis dream

For the Scott brothers, tennis is a passion; one that landed them a once-in-a-lifetime experience last month.
Members of a country club in Memphis, Tenn., Christian and Christopher received an invite to tryout to serve as ball boys during the ATP World Tennis Tour. Their selection gave them the chance to hang out with pro players during the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

  • Bicycle safety and a cycling group for the county

There has been an increased interest in cycling in the community, and it is important for everyone to recognize the rights these individuals have while on the road.
Speaking with Robert Garrett, who is a part of a local cycling group in Union County, he emphasized a law that was passed in the state in 2010, called The John Paul Frerer Bicycle Safety Act.
Mississippi shot down a bicycling law for two consecutive years leading up to Frerer’s death in a cycling accident. Now, the “three feet law” outlines rules for both cyclists and motorists.

  • Community embracing this weekend's race

On Saturday, more than 1,000 people will gather at New Albany Elementary to honor the life of Amanda Price. This is something I’ve written about several times since her passing last December, and on the eve of the 5K named after her, I want to do so once more, not only to reiterate some information, but also to show gratitude to the people who have worked to put this together.
