  • The year with three teams

I’m skipping around a lot of the ‘80s this week just because I was excited to research 1987 in particular. Why? Because that’s when only three teams played on the boys’ side of the UCT.

  • Stroud talks about the county tournament

Well, I surprised John Stroud with a stat.
When I spoke to some people early on about my plans to research the county tournament, the first thing several told me was that West Union boys have not won a county tournament title since 1976. If that’s the case, who better to talk to than Stroud, who was a member of that team.
But even he didn’t realize that the Eagles’ drought has gone for 36 years now.

  • Looking at the 1970s

As I start my research on the 1970s, I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s column to the girls.
Two things were pointed out to me during this decade: the format the girls played in during this time and that 1976 was the last time West Union’s boys won a county tournament title. For the West Union boys’ part, I spoke with Coach John Stroud earlier this week, and what we discussed during that time will be in the next column.
For now, we’re going to look at how the girls played during this time.

  • A special UC basketball historian

“Some people call it junk, but I call it treasures.”
I had a feeling I would get sidetracked while researching the history of the Union County basketball tournament, but in a good way.
I stopped in the office on Sunday afternoon and noticed I had a voicemail waiting on me. Now, my phone hardly ever rings, so my immediate thought was that I had a complaint of some sort, but rather the message was from Charles Owen of Myrtle.

  • Beginning research on the UCT

There’s nothing better than the Union County Tournament, or so I’ve been told and have witnessed for myself over the last four years.
Throughout the next few weeks, I’ll be going through each decade of the Union County basketball tournament, recapping what happened as part of some research I’m doing. Occasionally I’ll also throw in some stories that I’ve been told and take everyone down memory lane.

  • Learning about volleyball

I had the chance to hang out at Memorial Gym earlier this week to check out the tryouts for the inaugural volleyball team at New Albany.
I reported last month about the large number of attendees at the first practice, and with school being out and vacations and such going on, the number was quite lower when I made it to the gym for the later session Tuesday morning.
Nonetheless, I can say that there were some great athletes out there, and even more impressive was how much they had improved within a few weeks.

  • West Union coach honored with all-star selection

West Union baseball has remained consistent in its playoff runs over the last four seasons, and that is largely credited to the coach, Ashley Russell. For his efforts, Russell was named as a coach for the Crossroads All-Star game next weekend in Pearl. But if you ask the coach, he’ll tell you it’s not so much about him, but rather his kids at West Union.

  • Researching the Union County basketball tournament

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Friends of the Library’s monthly Lunch with Books session, where I reviewed Michael Oher’s book ‘I Beat the Odds’ for the group.
While I’m not exactly the best person you want to have speaking to your group, I enjoyed it nonetheless, as this is the second time I’ve reviewed a sports book for the group.

  • NEMCABB all-star game selects area athletes

Baseball season may be over, but we still have a couple more opportunities to watch some of the area’s best players compete.

  • Tennis excitement in New Albany

There’s a lot of excitement surrounding tennis in New Albany this week, as the Bulldogs are set to host the north half championship against Lafayette on Friday, and outside of the high school, you may have noticed how well the new courts at BNA Bank Park are coming along.
Talking with NAHS tennis coach Warner Creekmore, she spoke of the both topics, focusing of course on her team’s big match versus the Commodores.
