  • A future rivalry in football

Tuesday was a special day as far as football in this county. After covering softball at Ingomar, I made my way to Kitchens’ Field, where the junior high Bulldogs hosted East Union.
A couple of years ago, I covered the junior varsity and junior high games at New Albany when it was still the Union County squad, and it was awesome to see a potential county rivalry beginning in another sport.

  • Cotton States Fall League begins this weekend

This weekend marks the opening of the Cotton States Baseball League’s fall season, and from the number of applicants for this year, it is obvious the league is succeeding in working with athletes at both the junior high and high school levels.
The high school league alone will boast 22 teams this year and over 260 athletes from North Mississippi. Many Union County athletes will also participate in this, as its the last workout they can partake in before team practices begin after the Christmas break.

  • Slow pitch very much alive

I spent last Saturday at my second of several slow pitch tournaments taking place this fall. Roughly 22 teams from North Mississippi, including New Albany and all of the Union County schools, traveled to BNA Bank Park for the annual Robertson’s Sportswear Tournament. For a sport that’s “dying,” that’s not too bad.
Despite rain throughout the day, the competition never slowed down, and there were several great games, including Baldwyn’s win over Nettleton, snapping the Lady Tigers’ 35-game win streak.

  • New pro to improve tennis in New Albany

If tennis hasn’t garnered a lot of attention in the past, it’s about to change. Not only was New Albany host to its second junior sanctioned tournament last weekend, but working now at the new courts is tennis pro Bo Bowman, who brings an abundance of knowledge and ideas to help the sport grow in the area.

  • Excitement for the new football season

It’s my favorite time of the year, and for Union County, two big football games will take place on Friday.
All eyes will be on Kitchens’ Field with Ripley coming to town in a renewal of the Highway 15 Rivalry. New Albany has an impressive streak going against the Tigers, having won three straight and eight of the last 10 games in the series.

  • Finishing up the UCT research

My final week researching the Union County Tournament was a long one, as I started with 2000 and worked my way to the present (although the last four years were easy, because I covered them).

The early half of the decade was dominated by Ingomar boys, who won state in 2002, along with New Albany girls.

  • Beginning of a new school year

We’re a few days into the new school year, as hard as that is to believe. This weekend will mark the beginning of several sports, including slow pitch softball and football.

  • Union County dominance in the late 90s

I was right in thinking that I’d learn a lot about West Union girls this week.
Looking at the final part of the 90’s, the Lady Eagles won three of the four county tournaments; East Union won the other in 1997. During this span, Ken Basil’s team went to the state tourmanent every year, losing in the semifinals in 1996 and 1999 and winning state titles in 1997 and 1998.

  • Looking through the early 90s

If you want to see dominance, look at the early 90s and the Ingomar Lady Falcons.

The first half of this decade saw this team pick up six consecutive Union County Tournament titles, as well as three state titles in four years.

  • A fun decade of research

I probably spent way too long looking through the book of the Gazette from 1986.

Not only did I discover that I was born on a Friday and that the sports writer was a female (oh, the irony), but I saw a lot of fun stuff about the county tournament.
