  • Hickory Flat to honor first state championship team

Everyone around here knows and talks about New Albany’s three-peat in boys’ basketball during the 1980s. When I researched the county tournament last summer, I read about not only this, but I briefly touched on Hickory Flat, which saw a lot of success itself during this decade.
As part of this year’s homecoming festivities at Hickory Flat, the Rebels are honoring the school’s first state championship, which happened 30 years ago in March of 1983.

  • Rivalries and Twitter

While facing the mayhem on Black Friday in Tupelo last week, my dad and I took a break, which means I immediately went to my phone to check up on things in the world of Twitter.
Puzzled, my dad took my phone and scrolled through, trying to see what exactly it is that I find enthralling about the application. I then made the mistake of trying to explain to him what Twitter is and how important it is for me for work, etc. Needless to say, the conversation ended with no success and my dad simply shaking his head and surrendering my phone.

  • Many things to be thankful for

This week is a time where we all gather and remember the things we are thankful for. While I’m not the type to publish daily posts on Facebook and Twitter, talking about everything I’m thankful for this holiday season, I figured there’s not better time than now to mention a few thoughts I’ve had.

  • 2012 Student Section Challenge

With all the focus turning toward basketball, I’m pleased to announce plans for this year’s student section challenge, which will take place after Thanksgiving break.
I announced the games chosen over Twitter last week, but for those of you who are not big into social media, I’ll lay out the ground rules for this year’s competition.

  • Cross Country championship on the line this weekend

Cross country takes center stage this weekend, with our area schools competing for state championships in Clinton. East Union and Myrtle girls enter as defending state champions, and several top runners in the state are from right here in Union County.

  • Tremendous support for memorial tournament

Robby Hale made an impact on so many in the community, and that was evident over the weekend during a tournament named in his honor.
The inaugural Robby Hale “Make a Difference” tournament was held last Saturday at Oaks Country Club and at the tennis courts at BNA Bank Park. The organizers hoped to draw in a good amount of money and form a scholarship in Hale’s honor to be given to a deserving student in Union County.

  • County prepares for basketball season

The sudden injection of free time in my schedule means one thing; I’m in between seasons, and a new sport is about to start.
Beginning tomorrow, I’ll start running around with basketball, and while Saturday only features preseason jamboree games, it will still be a good time for fans to come out and get a first look at their respective teams for the new season.

  • End of slow pitch season

The slow pitch season has officially ended, and it was an exciting postseason for each of our schools that participated.
Last weekend definitely presented a challenge for me, as I had the task of hitting up four schools in one day, trying to cover as much as possible for each team; that after hanging out at the county cross country championships earlier that day.
Overall, I enjoyed the day and had the chance to watch some great games, and I went into Tuesday’s 1A north half title series expecting the same excitement.

  • Commending the tennis association

The growth of tennis in New Albany has been tremendous over the last few months. The obvious evidence of this is the number of people you can see at the courts on a daily basis while passing by on Highway 78. For their efforts in promoting the sport in our town, the New Albany Tennis Association has received several honors from the Mississippi USTA.

  • Preparing for slow pitch playoffs

Tuesday marks the beginning of the postseason for slow pitch softball. Four of the five Union County teams are still in the hunt for a state title; two will open the playoffs at home.
West Union and East Union enter as division champions for their respective regions. The Lady Eagles will take on Blue Mountain, and the Lady Urchins have yet to find out its first round opponent.
