  • Experience youth football in Sherman

It’s not often that I have the chance to catch a good Monday night football game, but lucky for me, I was able to watch the Saints and Cowboys this week.
I know what you’re thinking, “Elizabeth, the Monday night game was the Jets and Vikings,” but before you think I’m crazy, I’m not talking about that Monday night game. It’s the Sherman pee-wee football league, which gives area kids a great chance to learn the game at a young age.

  • Show support on Band Night

Friday night is a big night for New Albany. The Bulldogs will face another tough division opponent in Itawamba and look to improve to 8-0 on the season, and while I’m excited for the match-up, the pre-game festivities also have me pumped.

  • Time for the playoffs!

Whoever said that this would be a down year for slow pitch softball in the county was wrong.
One thing I’ve learned from working in Union County is that fans are passionate about any and all sports, including this one. Slow pitch is a sport that’s grown on me, and when you have successful teams to watch on a daily basis, it’s easy to follow and enjoy.

  • I've got my new shoes on....

    I blame Lawrence Zinn.

Two weeks ago at the New Albany-Baldwyn football game, I bumped into Zinn on the sideline and noticed a unique pair of shoes he was wearing. The scuba diving-like shoes with slots for each toe intrigued me, even more so after discovering that they’re good for running.

  • Catching up with the pros

There’s no doubt that I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to watch some amazing athletes here in Union County. The longer I’ve worked in this area, the more I’ve learned about some of the greats from the county, as well as watching the up and coming make names for themselves.
It’s for this reason that I’ll step away from local high school sports  this week to highlight what some native Union Countians are doing right now at the professional level.

  • A time of rememberance

Sports can offer so much to an individual at any given time. It’s a stress reliever, a hobby, or in my case, an occasional escape from everyday life and reality.
I’m sure everyone probably  has a story about where they were on Sept. 11, 2001. For me, it was second period, Mrs. Herron’s physical science class my sophomore year of high school.

  • First golfing experience

By now, it’s no secret that I live in Oxford, as it’s something that’s come up in conversation many times over the last two years. Whenever I find myself talking to people about where I live and why, I always find myself saying the same phrase at some point:

  • A little talk about rivalries

There’s nothing I love more than a good ole’ knock down, drag out, southern high school football rivalry. Stands packed, bands battling and excitement throughout, it’s these types of games that fans look forward to every year.
For my high school, the biggest game was always the last of the regular season: Starkville. By 2003, Columbus High had never won a game against our division opponent, and each year the senior class would proclaim that they would be the first to take down the Yellow Jackets.

  • Ready for football!

This week’s cheap seats are not exactly cheap, as I found myself in a very familiar stadium over the weekend.
Last Saturday, New Albany fans had their first look at this year’s football team, and they were not disappointed. Taking in the atmosphere of Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium, the Bulldogs showed a lot of energy throughout their scrimmage, downing the Golden Wave and putting a smile on the face of this Columbus High alum, as Tupelo is one of my alma mater’s big rivals.

  • Getting things started

Hard to believe it’s already a new school year. As I’m writing this, it’s the first day of the school, and I’m looking at how my calendar is already filled up through September. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited, but like most of you, I’m trying to figure out what happened to summer vacation.
