  • Meeting Ms. Bertha

I’ve become quite the connoisseur of concession stand food over the last two years, writing about several experiences, including a stint working at the New Albany Sportsplex. My next food journey takes me to East Union, where I had the opportunity to speak with the one and only, Ms. Bertha.

  • Lady Bulldogs' great experience

The first half of basketball season may be winding down, but for the Lady Bulldogs, their toughest test to date will take place this weekend.
Head coach John Stroud and his 18th nationally ranked Lady Bulldogs will hit the road for the Jerry and Sandy Wagner Tournament of Champions in Fort Smith, Ark., taking on some of the best teams in the south.

  • Enjoying soccer season

I couldn’t tell you the first thing about soccer, well, besides the fact that they kick a ball around.
When I attended Ole Miss, I worked in the Athletics Media Relations office and opted to work more  with the sports I didn’t know as much about, soccer being the main one.
Granted, my job was sitting on the sideline and blowing an air horn to indicate substitutions (which I chose to do solely because I was able to use an air horn), but a bulk of my knowledge of the sport comes from working this job for the better part of two years.

  • Hockey in Smashville

Union County needs a hockey team.

  • Moving on from football

Well, this was the first time in roughly 15 weeks that I had nothing to do with football. Think about how much time that is giving your undivided attention to one sport.

  • Superstitions and the big game

I’m a believer in the voodoo stick.
I wrote earlier this season about the cute superstition New Albany football picked up this year, where they place something on the stick symbolizing each team they defeated, and after a couple isolated incidents, I think there’s something to it.

  • Celebrating homecoming season

When I started at the Gazette, my primary focus was learning about football since that was the first sport and special section I would work with on my own. My predecessor, Mitchell Smith, gave me an odd look then explained that I would only cover one school, as this was before the county schools joined together for their squad. At that point, I didn’t know that non-football schools existed, especially since the smallest school in Lowndes County (West Lowndes), where I’m from, even had one.

  • I got a feeling...

When it gets to the point where I can no longer wear flip flops outside without feeling like my toes  are going to freeze off, and it’s time for me to move indoors, I know it’s basketball season.
I’ve been so caught up with football and whatnot, that the new season kind of snuck up on me, and before I knew it, I looked at my calendar and saw the next few months loaded with games and tournaments.

  • Honoring seniors and champs

Seems like each week gets more and more exciting!
I’m happy that I was able to stand on the sideline last week and witness history, as the Bulldogs won their first division title in 28 years and first in Division 1-4A. This team has come a long way from when I started at the Gazette in 2008, and I believe it’s because the right men are in charge of this program.

  • Historic times for county football

I know all the talk lately has been surrounded around football, and that’s for good reason. Friday night, New Albany will travel to Shannon with a shot of winning their first division title since 1982.
Think about that. 1982 was well before any member of this team was born, and heck, it was even before I was born.
I know I don’t always get things right as far as the history of teams in the county, but that’s where all of you and our books with old issues come in handy.
