  • Great basketball season coming to an end

    Friday night, we will close out the basketball season with one county team playing for a state championship. It’s been an exciting season, filled with upsets and surprises.
    When New Albany takes the court, it will be the second year in a row they play in the state title game, capping the careers of eight seniors, who have come a long way in the last three years.

  • Coburn honored as McDonald's All-American nominee

    Since 1978, the McDonald’s All-American game has been a staple in high school basketball. The nation’s best seniors are selected through a rigourous process that includes several committee votes, narrowing down a list of roughly 1,500 athletes nationwide.
    Today, New Albany honors one of its nominees for the boys squad, Tadarious Coburn. I recently wrote about the ‘Dawgs’ elite post player and his contribution to  Brad Gray’s program, but it was after that story that I learned of his nomination.

  • Celebrating the past and present in powerlifting

    New Albany’s success this school year has now stretched through several sports, with powerlifting joining the elite ranks this week.
    I traveled to Fulton for the ‘Dawgs division meet this past Monday, and it’s a trip I enjoy to make, as I spent two years there as a student at ICC. During that span, I had the privilege of taking a class under a teacher who, as I would later learn, had a valuable impact on the sport of powerlifting during his tenure at Pontotoc.

  • Bowling championship draws near

      An activity that often gets overlooked, even by myself, is bowling. Like archery, these are sports that are growing in popularity in the area, and Union County is no exception, boasting talented squads each year from both West Union and East Union.

    While the county has crowned three champions in bowling in as many years, I have yet to actually make it to a match, which is a shame and something I hate to admit.

  • National Signing Day

    I’m not big on the whole recruiting trail and following which kids sign with which school and whatnot, but I do enjoy the numerous visits I make to the schools in this time of year, as the county athletes embark on the next journey in their lives, playing collegiately.
    I attended my first signing of the year on Wednesday, watching as five Bulldogs (Tyler Basil, Kareem Brown, Taylor Goode, Shawn Smith and Collin Stubblefield) made it official, inking letters of intent to play football at Northeast.

  • Former 'Dawgs get second chance

    Jaylon Mosley and Brandon Cook just want another chance on the gridiron. 

    The former New Albany standouts have not played since high school, and despite an absence from the game, will now have a shot at their dream of playing at the next level, as they are charter members of the Lee County Tiger-Cats football team.

  • Celebrating 20 years of the Hotbed Classic

    From one tournament to the next, we’re shifting gears from the Union County basketball tournament to this weekend’s Hotbed Classic. This is the 20th year for the event, and in honor of the milestone, event coordinator Mike Nobles is bringing in 20 talented teams, including some of the best from Alabama. Also unique to this year is a girls game, which will feature state runners-up from 2010.

  • Taking part in FCA

    It is not often journalists cross into the realm of religion, so before anyone calls asking why I have chosen to, know in advance this is not my intent.
    Last week, I was invited to a dinner in which former Ole Miss Rebel and Baltimore Raven Jason Cook spoke to the NAHS boys basketball team. Cook, who had a very brief stint in the NFL, found his calling and returned to Oxford, where he is now involved with the Ole Miss Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as the Rebel football chaplain.

  • Bulldogs' tournament win

    New Albany has made a lot of noise the last two seasons in basketball, with most of the focus staying on the girls side. The state’s top ranked team, who currently still hold a national ranking in the USA Today poll, will again make a push for a state title, but behind them, in the shadows, are the boys.
    The Bulldogs traveled to Dyersburg, Tenn. last week to participate in a holiday tournament, taking on three tough opponents (Jackson Southside, Briarcrest and Brighton) and coming out on top as the tournament champions.
