  • Community rallies for little league tournament

    Last year, Tim Maharrey started what he hoped would become an annual event, one that would honor the life of a young lady, whose life ended tragically in a car accident.
    After the success of last year’s “Let’s Play for Emily” little league tournament, Maharrey has added more participants to this year’s event, which will take place tonight and tomorrow at Myrtle.

  • Community set for 16th annual Frog-a-Nanny

    Sixteen years ago, Kelly Coltharp had a dream of providing a fun event for the special needs children in New Albany. Working closely with these students in the school district, this is an area that has long touched her heart, and in 1995, Frog-a-Nanny began and still remains a staple in the community.
    The latest installment of the event will take place on Friday at the Sportsplex and has grown to include a parade, 5K walk and fun run, picnic and, of course, the ball games.

  • New leader for Bulldogs' soccer

    There’s no doubt that New Albany soccer took a major hit so soon after the achieved success, making it to the north half finals. The first step in the process of moving on is to find a new leader for the team, and the school did just that, announcing the hiring of Edgar Capaning on Monday.
    Capaning’s involvement with the sport in the community was self-described as a “14 year process,” working to improve the knowledge of the sport while working on the development through every level.

  • Holt prepares for nationals

    A New Albany native will soon have the chance to compete nationally in golf after another impressive year playing at Northeast.
    Austin Holt was consistently one of the standouts for the NAHS golf team and has since worked his way to the number one spot on the Northeast squad.
    The added pressure wasn’t too much for Holt to deal with, as he progressed to the state tournament then the Region 23 match in Amory. From there, Holt shot a 78 and 71 respectively, finishing second as an individual to make it to the national tournament in Alabama next month.

  • Cotton States prepares for third season

    Baseball is one of the more enjoyable sports for me to cover just because of the warm weather and atmosphere at the games. Outside of work, I love spending summer afternoons and evenings in Memphis watching the Redbirds or curling up at home watching my lovable losers, the Cubs.
    It’s hard to feel like you’re really working when you have the chance to layout and watch games all summer, and over the last two years, I’ve come to appreciate the BNA Bank Cotton States League that plays here in town.

  • Preparing for spring practice

    Spring football is less than a month away, and for Scott Duley and the Union County squad, they have a lot more to look forward to heading into their first season playing a full varsity schedule.
    “We’ve planned eight games as of right now with an open date that we hope to fill,” Duley said of the county’s 2011 slate.

  • Last go around for Dillard

    Stephanie Dillard started at Blue Mountain College with hopes of becoming a successful runner on Heather Duley’s cross country team. With the addition of softball and baseball to the school’s athletic program this year, she now has the chance to play another sport she loved while in high school at East Union.
    Dillard attended the tryouts for the Lady Toppers’ softball team and is now a member of the inaugural squad, which is currently in the middle of their season, playing their home games at the New Albany Sportsplex.

  • The Challenge

    Probably one of my new favorite TV shows is Man vs. Food. The Travel Channel show features Adam Richman on his various adventures trying different restaurants across the country as well as a challenge that has him eating some type of ridiculous meal.
    For whatever reason I find this show highly amusing, which is why I gladly spent last Saturday night at the Pizza Pit for New Albany’s own Man vs. Food competition.

  • Working to make an even playing field

    Anyone take notice of the name of New Albany’s opponent in the 4A boys’ semifinals last week?
    St. Stanislaus College-- It’s a private boarding school that’s allowed to compete with the public schools in the MHSAA.
    Puzzled as to how this can be allowed?
    You’re not alone, and the topic of these schools, that recruit their athletes, are on the minds of many throughout the state.
    But this is a problem that has been going on for longer than the isolated incidents of this year’s State Basketball Championships.
