  • Supporting the CSBL

    The Cotton States Baseball League is back again this summer, and like in previous years, several talented athletes from Union County will take part in the summer wooden bat league, preparing to play in college.
    Eight athletes from the county will play this year: Easton Hall, Mason Maxey, Drew Wray, Alex Boland, Tyler Dowdy, Trey Barkley, Hunter McCreight and Brandon Montgomery. Also, New Albany assistant baseball coach Buddy Hall will be over one of the teams, the Tupelo Thunder.

  • Another school year ends

    Another school year has come to an end, and I don’t know about y’all, but I’m thankful for the break.
    Of course I use this term loosely, as there are plenty of upcoming events that will occupy my time as it does during this time of the year.
    As I normally do at this point, I want to highlight some of my favorite moments from this last school year. There were many emotional moments throughout the last nine months, including several in the final two weeks.

  • Former high school standouts make impact in college

    It has been a great week for former Union County standouts, as they’ve achieved many accomplishments at the collegiate level.
    The top two stories in today’s paper highlight what the current high school athletes are doing, including Molly Hale’s individual title in girls’ golf. Often falling off the radar are the athletes that have graduated and moved on, most playing at Northeast and a couple at Itawamba Community College.

  • Celebrating success in archery

    Archery season came to an end last week with the championships, run by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
    With the sport growing throughout the state, more schools are participating each year, but as of right now, this is an activity that does not have a sanctioned state championship by the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

  • Previewing the fast pitch playoffs

    The end of this week officially marks the end of the regular season for softball, and it looks like the divisions are settled and we know who will make the playoffs.
    Starting in 1A, I had the chance to watch the Myrtle-West Union series on Monday and Tuesday, with the Lady Eagles taking the sweep to pick up its sixth straight division title. West Union closed out its division slate on Wednesday with a 6-5 win at home against Ingomar to finish a perfect 8-0 in district play.

  • Baseball season winding down

    Hard to believe we’re almost through the regular season for spring sports, and we have only another week before we enter the postseason for baseball and softball.
    Next week presents some really good match-ups with seeding for the upcoming postseason on the line.
    This is also the time that my head spins, trying to figure out seeding for the postseason. Because most schools keep the Maxpreps website updated, I’ll use that to break down possible seeding.

  • A game to support a good cause

    I’ve enjoyed getting to know some of the older, former players in the community over the past few years, so it’s no surprised I’m extremely excited about upcoming Harlem Legends game, which will feature some of Union County’s best former athletes.

  • Celebrating March Madness

    I couldn’t tell you the last time I took part in the March Madness fun, filling out a bracket and taking part in various tournament pools. It wasn’t that long ago that I hosted an annual tournament challenge among my Facebook friends, and while I never won my own pool, I took more pride in beating my brother and his best friend in Alaska.

  • Spring sports and the next special section

    There are plenty of baseball and softball tournaments going on this week, as we lead up to the beginning of division play for our area teams.
    This weekend, East Union, Ingomar and New Albany will be at the North Pontotoc Tournament, playing in six games total. The Lady Bulldogs (1-4) look to get back on the winning side, playing North Pontotoc and Tupelo, Walnut and Falkner. Ingomar will also take on North Pontotoc and Tupelo in the final games on Saturday, and East Union will play North Pontotoc and Ripley in the first two games of Saturday.

  • Experiencing the state bowling championships

    Last Friday, I was engulfed in a an intense atmosphere. Partially because of what was taking place at Paradise Lanes....and partially because we were all crammed into the small bowling alley.
    Regardless, last week was my first experience at the state bowling championships. Normally this is a time I’m tied up at basketball games, but since the opportunity presented itself, I made the trip early Friday morning to watch five of our teams battle for a state title.
