  • Great Delta Bear Affair

    The Great Delta Bear Affair was first observed in 2002 on the 100th anniversary of President Theodore Roosevelt’s famous bear hunt in Sharkey County, Mississippi which led to the creation of the Teddy Bear. This year’s theme is “Baby Bear Blues.” The festival will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010 on the grounds of the Sharkey County courthouse in Rolling Fork. Events will begin at 7:30 a.m. and conclude with fireworks just after dark. Rolling Fork is located on Highway 61 approximately 40 miles south of Leland and 40 miles north of Vicksburg.

  • Mississippians support Gulf restoration

    they support funding to restore the environmental health of the Gulf, according to a new poll released by a coalition of conservation, business and fishing groups dedicated to restoring the Gulf Coast. The poll was funded by The Walton Family Foundation.


    The poll is timely because while the U.S. House of Representatives has passed an oil-spill response bill that directs funding to Gulf Coast restoration, the Senate, even with the elections fast approaching, has yet to act on oil-spill response legislation.

  • FLW college fishing Southeast Division to host event at Pickwick Lake

    FLORENCE, Ala. (Sept. 23, 2010) – National Guard FLW College Fishing is headed to Pickwick Lake Oct. 2 for the fourth and final stop in the Southeast Division. Forty collegiate teams will be competing for a top award of $10,000 to be split evenly between the school and bass fishing club.
     

  • Teal season opens September 11

    Mississippi hunters will get their first chance to chase waterfowl when teal season opens Saturday, September 11.   The early teal season is growing in popularity as hunters are learning how fun it can be to break out their decoys and calls and watch blue-winged teal rocket through the air. Hunters need to be sure their hunting license is current for the 2010 hunting season, complete with Harvest Information Program (HIP) certification, as well as purchase state and federal waterfowl stamps.

    Mississippi has more land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) than any other state in the Southeast United States – about one-third of the Southeast’s total CRP acreage to be exact.

  • Top 3 Mississippi Towns For Sportsmen

     Outdoor Life magazine recently ranked three Mississippi towns among “America's Top 200 Towns for Sportsmen” in its June/July 2010 issue. Pascagoula ranked 149, Vicksburg came in at 160 and Greenville took the 168 spot. The magazine used extensive data to score 200 towns on their sporting opportunities and quality-of-life issues for its third annual ranking.

  • Liberal duck seasons again for Mississippi

    The Mississippi Flyway Council voted to adopt the liberal regulatory alternative for duck seasons on July 24, 2010.  
    This means Mississippi waterfowl hunters will again have the opportunity to hunt 60 days with a 6-duck daily bag limit for the 2010-2011 waterfowl hunting season according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP).
