  • Bulldog Sweep

    New Albany has a flair for the dramatic and once again came from behind to top Myrtle, capturing the Union County Girls Championship, 53-45, Saturday night.

    A packed house on Myrtle’s home court watched the Lady Hawks command most of the game until the fourth quarter. Down by nine, New Albany went on a 21-4 run to close the game and capture their third straight UCT title.

  • Union County Tournament- Day two

    Just when the Hawks thought they were set to advance to the boys championship of the Union County Tournament, Ingomar made a late run to almost top Myrtle in the final minute of their semifinal game Friday night.

    Ahead by 10, 62-52, Myrtle only held on for a three-point win, 69-66 after Ingomar closed the game outscoring the Hawks 14-7, nine points off three-straight three pointers.

  • County teams set for 2011 tournament

    The hotbed looks to heat up again this weekend after area schools were handed a break due to weather. All eyes will be on Myrtle for the 2011 Union County Tournament with New Albany girls and Ingomar boys entering as the defending champions.

  • NAHS opens new year in soccer

    New Albany opened the new year with two weekend matches against Pontotoc and Corinth.

    The Lady ‘Dawgs dropped both contests, 5-0 to Pontotoc and 3-1 to Corinth with Morgan Odle scoring the lone goal of the two games, assisted by Hannah Anderson in Saturday’s road match at Corinth.

    “We were already exhausted with playing the night before and the long bus ride that morning,” head coach Les Huntington said.” We took the early lead against Corinth, but after their second and third goals, our defense just broke down.”

  • Late rally lifts New Albany over Myrtle

    The deciding factor in the latest installment of one of the county’s biggest rivalries came down to a single play pinning two of the area’s best players against one another.

    With less than a minute remaining and the score tied, Jazmine Spears held the ball close to mid-court, eventually driving in the lane against Aspriona Gilbert, nailing an eight-foot shot to give New Albany the lead and eventually the 49-48 win over Myrtle.

  • 2011 Union County Tournament schedule announced

    County coaches gathered on Wednesday in preparation for the 2011 Union County Basketball Tournaments, which will be held at Myrtle and Ingomar.

  • Lady Bulldogs back on track after win against Itawamba

    New Albany snapped a two-game losing streak and earned a tough division win, defeating Itawamba at home Tuesday night.

    Jazmine Spears picked up her fourth foul late in the game, but head coach John Stroud showed confidence in his sophomore star, keeping her in the game as New Albany earned the 56-43 win.

  • Talented sophomores headline 2011 NA softball season

    With the new year and the second semester of school beginning, the time is drawing closer for the opening of softball and baseball practice for area schools. Throughout the course of the next month, the Gazette will feature each county team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
    In New Albany, the Lady Bulldogs hope that momentum from their successful slow pitch campaign will help them make the playoffs, as they are led by a talented sophomore class.

  • Union County basketball 2011 preview

    The second half of the 2010-2011 basketball season tips off next Tuesday, and for several teams, it is time to make a push toward potential division titles as well as the state tournament in late February.
    New Albany boys and both East Union squads are in action this week, participating in separate tournaments, with the Urchins and Lady Urchins splitting their Monday bill at the Baldwyn Rotary and New Albany earning wins over Jackson Southside and Briarcrest, TN in the Dyersburg Tournament.

  • ICC hands out postseason soccer awards

    Itawamba Community College soccer coach Mike Sullivan announced the award winners for the 2010 season at the annual ICC Soccer Banquet.

    Paige Zahller (New Albany) was voted team MVP and Most Outstanding Defensive Player for the Lady Indians. Shelby Brown (New Albany) was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player

    Trace Nabors (Tupelo) was named team MVP for the Indians. Logan Ayers (Tupelo) took home the Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award while Tyler Cunningham (Jacksonville, AL) earned Most Outstanding Offensive Player and Hustle awards.
