  • Bulldogs win home opener against Ripley

When Joel Gafford walked onto Legion Field Tuesday night, he was in unfamiliar territory, as he was, for the first time, the opponent of New Albany. In his first regular season game as a head coach, the 2003 NAHS graduate and his Ripley Tiger squad opened their 2011 campaign falling to the team he once played and worked for.

  • 'Dawgs' rally falls short against St. Stanislaus

New Albany may have not been given much of a chance going into their semifinal match-up against St. Stanislaus, but the Bulldogs made the most of their opportunity before falling in the final minutes of their 73-66 game Monday night.

The Bulldogs led for a majority of the first half despite the Rock-a-Chaws using their inside force, led by Johnny Zuppardo with 11 first quarter points.

  • Lady Bulldogs advance to championship game

It was 25 years ago that John Stroud traveled to Jackson with the New Albany boys’ team and won a state championship. Now, Stroud and his Lady Bulldog squad became one step closer to capturing the title they have coveted for the last three seasons.

But it was not easy for the state’s top ranked team.

Down by as many as seven, New Albany fought from behind for their 4A semifinal win over South Jones, 57-52, on Monday.

  • Bulldogs set for 4A showdown

Brad Gray has seen his team respond well after losses, and as the Bulldogs prepare for the 4A State Semifinals, he hopes to see that same attitude when they play St. Stanislaus on Monday.
“It was tough losing in North Half, but despite that, we’re still playing, he said.
“That’s what we’re trying to get across to our kids. You don’t want to lose, but we still have a shot. We’re still alive, and usually they come back the first game after a loss with a chip on their shoulder, so I think we’ll be okay.”

  • Ready and determined

An even more determined Lady Bulldog squad awaits their next opponent, and for the third year in a row, New Albany travels to Jackson in quest of a state title. After the letdown in 2010, it is all business for head coach John Stroud and his top-ranked squad.

  • North Half Championship recap

Lady Bulldogs win second straight North Half title

For the second year in a row, it took overtime for the Lady Bulldogs to claim the North Half Championship, as they earned the 46-42 win over Pontotoc on Saturday.

  • North Half Semifinal Recap

Twelve months separate the two times New Albany and Lafayette have faced one another. The last match-up saw the Lady Bulldogs edge the Lady Commodores in double overtime to win the North Half Championship. This year, the stakes were higher, as the two squads battled knowing that only one would advance to Jackson.

Defense was the story for the Lady ‘Dawgs, as they held Lafayette to only 35 points, leading to their semifinal win.

  • Lady Bulldogs advance to showdown vs. Lafayette

John Stroud saw the team he is most familiar with return Thursday night.

New Albany showed no mercy in their second round North Half game, topping Noxubee County, 71-30.

“We stressed today that these are put-out games from here on out, so there’s no letting up,” he said. “We’re playing more now with intensity and we’re more focused, not letting up at any point. I think they see how close we are to going back to Jackson, and it showed more in the way we’re playing.”

  • Bulldogs win first division powerlifting title

New Albany High School has achieved success in several sports this year, and the boys powerlifiting squad added to that on Monday, winning the school’s first division championship.

  • New Albany advances in playoffs

A second half surge gave the Lady ‘Dawgs a first round win in the 4A North Half playoffs Tuesday night.

Head coach John Stroud watched as his team built a 10-2 lead early on only to have Rosa Fort tie the contest late in the frame and take their only lead in the second. Clinging to a 27-22 lead at the half, New Albany broke away in the third quarter, leading to the 65-48 win.
