  • The City of New Albany has done the fair thing in agreeing to pay more money to Union County for collecting city taxes.

  • Often we take for granted businesses or institutions right in our own community. Sometimes it takes recognition from outside the community to remind us of what we’ve got right here in New Albany.

  • RiverFest has come and gone and it’s time to look at the report card. Here’s the way we saw it: Overall, RiverFest was very successful and the parts that make up the whole appear to be on the right track.

  • Some legislators, tired of being reminded that they have failed to follow their own law in providing money to public schools, now want to tinker with the law’s formula.

  • Every once in a while something happens that just leaves us stunned.
    That’s where we are today with the news that on almost no notice our area’s largest annual event has been forced out of its downtown location on Bankhead Street in front of the Union County Courthouse.

  • The state of Mississippi has released the results of its annual public school performance testing and both New Albany and Union County showed continuing improvement in their overall scores.

  • The Heritage Pioneer Days, which has become one of the largest events in town for school classes and families with young children, will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

  • Over the past couple of months we’ve gauged the community support for and watched closely the performance of Jackie Ford as the interim superintendent of the New Albany Schools.

  • Mischief is being made in Oxford again.
    Last fall a group calling itself Forward Rebels placed anonymous ads in newspapers around the state critical of the University of Mississippi administration and especially its athletic director.

  • Once in a while we need to pause and remind ourselves of the quality work done at our New Albany and Union County schools to prepare our students for the life ahead.

  • For the second year, the Tallahatchie RiverFest will get under way with a Kickoff Community Luncheon.

  • New Albany has built a beautiful tennis complex that already is a showplace for tennis tournaments that will attract players not only from the region, but also from neighboring states.

  • The United Way has kicked off its 2012 campaign across the seven counties, including Union, that are part of the United Way of Northeast Mississippi.

  • The cover of the New Albany Football Souvenir Program for the 2012 season says it all.

  • The New Albany Board of Aldermen has taken a first step in improving the promotion of tourism in the city.

  • The Town of Blue Springs has a big task ahead in preparing for development expected in the area because of the new Toyota manufacturing plant.

  • Hundreds of children and their parents will descend on Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County Saturday morning for the annual Back to School Health Fair.

  • The contrast is striking. There was Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves this week speaking at a county fair in Philadelphia criticizing those who oppose so-called “charter schools,” which he and the Republican administration of Gov. Phil Bryant have made a major education priority.

  • Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County has a longstanding commitment to the health of our community. That commitment takes many forms, from the hospital itself to a variety of community outreach programs.

  • School starts next Tuesday in both New Albany and Union County and it’s time for all of us to slow down and pay closer attention while driving.
