  •  The decision by Union and Pontotoc counties to pool resources and hire one economic development director strikes us as a good one.

The Union County Development Association, the Pontotoc County Chamber of Commerce and the Union and Pontotoc county boards of supervisors have decided to recruit one person to represent both counties.

  • Just think of it as a car payment. That’s what my wife says each time The Rocket goes in for repairs.

The Rocket is my gray Acura sedan. It’s rather ordinary looking, but it rides really well, goes quickly when my foot wants it to, and gets 32 miles a gallon on the open road.

  •  The death of an 8-year-old boy in Ecru from an accidental shooting again has underscored the importance of handling and storing guns safely.

While straightening up a bed, the boy found a loaded pistol under a mattress at his grandfather’s house. The gun went off, the bullet hit the boy in the head and a needless death was the result.

  •  Two important health-related events are coming up in New Albany and we want to give a nod to both of them.

  •  Here are a few things that have crossed my mind lately:

  •  It was the kind of uplifting story that nearly brought tears to our eyes. We’re talking about the story in last Friday’s Gazette written by our reporter Angie Barmer about Albert Smith.

Smith’s family were sharecroppers and he often worked in the fields instead of going to class. The last year of school he completed was fourth grade and he could not read and write.

  •  The seemingly unending saga of the unfinished spray park goes on.

The suggestion by Mayor Tim Kent that the spray park might be finished and operational by Fourth of July weekend proved very optimistic.

  •  Some people detest junk mail. I sort of like to look through it, because it’s about all the mail we get, except for the monthly bills.

I especially like the catalogs, even though I seldom order anything out of them.

  •  The New Albany School District has taken another step forward in preparing students for being successful in college or in a career.

This fall the New Albany School of Career and Technical Education will offer high school students a new course program  to help them with digital media skills.

  •  This week’s New Albany Board of Aldermen meeting didn’t improve our comfort level much with the plan to have a new independent contractor take over animal control in the city.

  •  Every time I pull into our driveway, I start thinking about tomatoes and feeling a little guilty.

A tomato plant is growing up right through the concrete, at least it seems so. Actually, I think its roots go down between cracks in the curb. Ever since it came up, my wife has been out there nurturing it.

  • Recently I read a story about the National Safety Council wanting the government to ban talking on cell phones while driving.

It got me to thinking about driving distractions.

  •  Tomorrow is the day we honor America.

But do we really? Oh, we’ll put out our flags, perhaps set off some fireworks and maybe even do something patriotic. But do we really honor our country and its government? We wonder sometimes.

  •  Much needed upgrades to the electrical system, as well as other maintenance items, are being completed this summer at Ingomar Attendance Center.

  •  The long and frustrating effort to get a spray park constructed inside the New Albany Sportsplex appears to be near an end.

To say it’s not a moment too soon is an understatement. What was projected to be a three-month project when it was approved by the New Albany Board of Alderman last May has turned into 14 months.

  • Dear Editor:

  •  Our community is grieving over the tragic death of Marshuan Braxton, a New Albany High School student, who was swept away by a wave while on a mission trip to Costa Rica.

  •  Looks a little different, doesn’t it? It was time for a change at the Gazette, so we’ve given the paper a fresh, more modern design.

  •  Quality health care has taken another step forward in Union County.

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County has acquired a new digital mammography machine that produces a much better quality picture than the old x-ray technique.

  •  The decision by the New Albany School Board to go ahead with plans to build a practice facility for high school cheerleaders is a win-win situation for the city’s high school and for district taxpayers.
