Finally being able to step on the field after recent delays from the weather, West Union wrapped up its north half semifinal series with a 12-2 win in game three against Vardaman on Tuesday.

The day opened with the conclusion of game two, where the Lady Rams were in front 10-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. West Union added one more run on an error, but the Lady Rams scored four runs in the top of the fifth, capped by a base-clearing double by Laken Lucius.

There were more than enough setbacks before New Albany could finally hit the courts in defense of its state title in 4A tennis. Recent rains reeked havoc on the postseason, but on Tuesday, almost two weeks after the originally scheduled state title match against St. Stanislaus, the Bulldogs took care of business, defeating the Rock-a-Chaws five games to one, winning its second consecutive state title; the third title in four years.

The sale of liquors and wine of more than five percent of alcohol by weight will become legal in the city of New Albany on June 6.

The dugout was dead silent, and there was nothing but intense focus as West Union was a game away from making the 1A state championship in softball. The Lady Eagles are two years removed from its last trip to Jackson, and memories of that series carried with the team as they faced the defending champion, Smithville.
