Today's Opinions

  • 3rd place no honor

The death of an 8-year-old boy in Ecru from an accidental shooting again has underscored the importance of handling and storing guns safely.

While straightening up a bed, the boy found a loaded pistol under a mattress at his grandfather’s house. The gun went off, the bullet hit the boy in the head and a needless death was the result.

  • Healthy event fairs

Two important health-related events are coming up in New Albany and we want to give a nod to both of them.

  • Tomatoes and theater

Here are a few things that have crossed my mind lately:

  • Literacy is important

It was the kind of uplifting story that nearly brought tears to our eyes. We’re talking about the story in last Friday’s Gazette written by our reporter Angie Barmer about Albert Smith.

Smith’s family were sharecroppers and he often worked in the fields instead of going to class. The last year of school he completed was fourth grade and he could not read and write.

  • Free fun in August

The seemingly unending saga of the unfinished spray park goes on.

The suggestion by Mayor Tim Kent that the spray park might be finished and operational by Fourth of July weekend proved very optimistic.

  • Junk mail or monthly bills

Some people detest junk mail. I sort of like to look through it, because it’s about all the mail we get, except for the monthly bills.

I especially like the catalogs, even though I seldom order anything out of them.

  • Keeping up with digital

The New Albany School District has taken another step forward in preparing students for being successful in college or in a career.

This fall the New Albany School of Career and Technical Education will offer high school students a new course program  to help them with digital media skills.

  • Was it the ‘best’ bid?

This week’s New Albany Board of Aldermen meeting didn’t improve our comfort level much with the plan to have a new independent contractor take over animal control in the city.
