  • Thanks for East Union road improvement

    To the Editor:

While educators are always concerned with academic progress and student achievement, they must also be acutely aware of student safety. Parents want to know that their children are safe at school. The East Union administration recently proposed a plan to relocate the school bus loading and unloading zone. The purpose for this proposed change was to minimize safety risks for our students.

  • Praise for community support

    Dear Editor:

Ever once in a while something happens that just blows your mind and last
(Friday) night was one of those rare times when even your wildest expectations just  get so far exceeded that you just can’t believe what just happened.

  • Support the museum

    Dear Editor:

Several weeks ago I undertook a task for New Albany Garden Club that would normally have involved countless hours and miles of travel. I began researching William Faulkner’s first edition novels for his mention of local flowers and plant life to be used in the Faulkner Garden.

  • Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Week

    Dear Editor:

In recognition of March as Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Month, I would like to take the opportunity to encourage all Mississippians to learn more about intellectual and developmental disabilities.  These terms cover a broad range of often misunderstood characteristics.

  • Helmets for ATV riders

    Dear Editor:

To little fanfare, by 2010 Mississippi had met its five year goal of decreasing highway traffic deaths by 10 percent two years early.  A major part of that decrease was enacting a Primary Seatbelt law in 2006 and the public education campaign about the new law, “Click It or Ticket.”

  • School Boards Recognition Week

    Dear Editor:

The Union County School District and the New Albany School District will join districts across the state to thank school board members during School Board Member Recognition Week, Feb. 13-19, for their leadership and service to local school districts and communities.

  • Bye, Bye, Birdie praised

    Dear Editor:

Once again, New Albany High School has put on an outstanding production!
Bye, Bye, Birdie was really a first class production from A to Z.  The students all did an excellent job of singing, acting, and dancing the night away.  Fred  Astaire and Ginger Rogers would have been proud to see you all dance and sing

  • Honoring Eli Whiteside

    Dear Editor:

One of the incalculable benefits of living in a small town, albeit one as great as New Albany, is the opportunity to exalt the accomplishments of its fellow citizens. One such point of pride for the city is inevitably Eli Whiteside’s attainment of a World Series championship as a member of the San Francisco Giants baseball team.

  • Thanks for inclement weather help

    Dear Editor:

For the New Albany and Union County school districts, this has been a very challenging year in relation to inclement weather and the decision making process related to inclement weather.

  • Make Mississippi smoke free

    Dear Editor:

Having worked for years in a business that allows smoking, having been associated with the American Cancer Society for 13 years, and as someone allergic to smoke, I was thrilled to read your Dec. 30 editorial, “Toyota and tobacco,” and learn that all tobacco use will be banned at the new Toyota plant in Union County.
